The US attacks Venezuela and Maduro at the UN. Diplomatic clash with Russia and China
Washington aims to block the resources of the Venezuelan regime accused of funding a terrorist group, while Moscow condemns the measures as a violation of international law
The United States intends to apply sanctions against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro at the highest possible level in order to deprive him of resources that, according to Washington, would be used to finance the Cartel de los Soles. This was stated by the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, addressing the UN Security Council on the situation in Venezuela.
"The United States will impose and enforce sanctions to the fullest extent possible to deprive Maduro of the resources he uses to fund the Cartel de los Soles," Waltz said, pointing out that Washington has designated this organisation as a terrorist group. In his speech, the ambassador reiterated the US administration's position that the Venezuelan government poses a serious threat to the region. "It is the actions and policies of the illegitimate Maduro regime that pose an extraordinary threat to the peace and stability of our hemisphere," he said.
"The United States will do everything within its considerable power to protect our hemisphere, our borders, and the American people," Waltz added.
Heavy criticism from Russia and China
The very meeting of the Security Council was the scene of a diplomatic clash between the US and Russia. Since the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia stated that 'the US imposition of a blockade against Venezuela can only be considered an act of aggression. The Moscow representative also added that Russia "strongly condemns" the US seizure of Venezuelan oil tankers, calling the operations a violation of international law and a further escalation of tensions. "The illegal blockade imposed by the United States off the coast of Venezuela is the clearest and absolutely real act of aggression," Nebenzia said.
In the same vein were the criticisms levelled at the US by China, which added its voice to Moscow's to denounce US military and economic pressure on Venezuela before the UN Security Council, calling it 'cowboy behaviour' and 'intimidation' respectively. US Ambassador Mike Waltz replied that 'the United States will do everything possible to protect our hemisphere, our borders and the American people' during the emergency meeting requested by Venezuela with the support of Russia and China.
