Donald Trump has appointed businessman Tilman J. Fertitta as the new ambassador to Italy.
Fertitta, born 57 years ago in Galveston, Texas, is the owner of the Houston Rockets basketball team, and his name as the new ambassador to Rome had already been circulating. He is also a hospitality-entertainment entrepreneur and TV personality.
In 2023, Forbes estimated his fortune at $8.4 billion. Fortune ranks him 260th on the list of the richest people. Of Sicilian descent, his father Vic owned a seafood restaurant and after school Fertitta used to help peel shrimp. His career spans hotels, restaurants, casinos and amusement parks.
He was also a star on the reality show Billion Dollar Buyer on Cnbc. In 2017 he bought the Rockets (Houston's Nba team) for $2.2 billion.
Married twice, he had four children by his first wife. In the past he has donated in a bipartisan way, to Democrats and Republicans, from the Clintons to the Bushes.
