Monumental concrete sculptures, sequence drawings, installations and videos for the exhibition that the Palazzo Reale in Milan dedicates to Valerio Berruti. An itinerary of rare poetry that makes this artist a leading interpreter of themes related to childhood and beyond.
The exhibition presents unprecedented exhibits such as the large sculpture 'Don't let me be wrong', located in the corner of the courtyard of honour. In the dark of one room we find "A safe place", or how an ordinary object, a lifebelt, can be transformed from an object of amusement for the children of the rich West into a necessary tool to save the lives of children who, instead, have the misfortune of having to cross our seas as refugees.
Music has a fundamental component in your poetics. Here, the musical accompaniment is by Ludovico Einaudi and in an extraordinary way accompanies the installation 'La giostra di Nina'. Would you like to tell us about this combination?
"This is a project to which I am very attached. Ludovico Einaudi is originally from Dogliani, which is a village in the Langhe, so like me. I liked the idea of combining this local relationship in a glocal conception, that is, starting from a small Italian province and arriving all over the world. I had asked Ludovico if he would like to collaborate with me on this project and this work came out of it, which I am enthusiastic about because it is an animation that starts from a great sculpture, this merry-go-round made with sparrows instead of horses; first the merry-go-round was born and then the animation in which the merry-go-round is the protagonist. The musical part is fundamental, I think it is really 50 per cent of the work; we had a very close collaboration and as I made pieces I sent them to him, he sent me the soundtrack, it was really an incredible experience for me. I think Ludovico Einaudi is one of the greatest musical talents we have in Italy'.
