The 33rd Mondial des Vins Extrêmes, the only wine competition in the world dedicated to wines from heroic vine-growing and organised by Cervim - Centre for Research, Studies, Safeguarding, Coordination and Valorisation for Mountain Vine-growing - will be held in Sarre on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September. The competition will be flanked by the fifth Extreme Spirits International Contest, the international competition of spirits produced in extreme territories. The novelty of this Mondial des Vins Extrêmes will be the return, after five years, of the award ceremony and tasting of the award-winning wines at the Fortress of Bard. The ceremony will be held during Vins Extrêmes, the international exhibition of wines from heroic viticulture, on 22 and 23 November. 'Extreme viticulture,' emphasises Nicola Abbrescia, 'is a heritage to be protected and valorised, not only for its link with the territory but also for its contribution to biodiversity and sustainability. The Mondial represents an acknowledgement for vine growers who work with passion in difficult but unequalled beautiful places'. "The Cervim," says Regional Councillor for Agriculture Marco Carrel, "carries out an important research activity and collaborates with numerous international bodies for the protection and promotion of precious wines, helping to give visibility to small but courageous producers. The competition was set up to promote and safeguard the production of small wine-growing areas on islands or mountains, steeply sloping or terraced, where mainly native vines are grown. Evaluations of the competing wines and spirits will be carried out by commissions, consisting of five members including wine technicians, oenologists, journalists and tasters.
