Van ploughs into Pride parade in Berlin, leaving one dead and 16 injured. 21-year-old Abdul wanted by police

The Berlin police believe they have identified at least one suspect in last night’s attack on the Berlin Gay Pride parade, in which a van was driven into the crowd: 21-year-old Abdul B. However, there may be other accomplices on the run, who may have caused further injuries. The man identified is of slim build and has black hair. He was wearing a black hooded top and white trousers. In a statement issued by the German capital’s police at 07.05, as reported by the BBC, ‘it is believed that one or more people then fled the vehicle’ and that ‘several people were injured with bladed weapons’.

The Berlin police have released a police sketch of the alleged attacker, identified as 21-year-old Abdul, and have issued a warning stating that he is ‘armed and dangerous’. The German Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Berlin Regional Criminal Investigation Department are investigating ‘on suspicion of a terrorist attack’. It is not yet clear whether this was the work of a single perpetrator or whether there were any accomplices. According to the police, witnesses have given conflicting accounts regarding the number of perpetrators – whether there was one or more. The possible use of a bladed weapon is being investigated by the police, but this has not yet been confirmed.

At around 10 pm last night, a van drove into Tiergarten city park and ploughed into the crowd gathered for the demonstration, killing one person – a woman – and injuring 16 others, three of whom are in a critical condition. The 21-year-old suspect, who was released from a youth detention centre in May, is reportedly known to the authorities and linked to ‘Islamist circles’. The police carried out a search of a flat but found it empty. The mayor of the German capital said: “An attack on our society, which is open to the world.” Chancellor Friedrich Merz described it as “an abominable act” and promised an investigation conducted “with particular determination” to bring the perpetrator to justice.
