Veneto passes the law on end-of-life care
Following Tuscany, Sardinia and Emilia-Romagna, it is the fourth Italian region – and the first governed by the centre-right – to give the go-ahead
The Regional Council of Veneto has approved the citizens’ initiative bill on end-of-life care. Following Tuscany, Sardinia and Emilia-Romagna, it is the fourth Italian region – and the first governed by the centre-right – to give the go-ahead.
The measure, which sets out ‘procedures and timeframes for regional healthcare provision in relation to medically assisted suicide’, was approved with 32 votes in favour, 5 abstentions and 14 against.
Zaia: ‘Ethical issues should be a no-fly zone for politics’
‘There are supporters and opponents on both the right and the left. There is no clear-cut political divide, so the only solution is to rely on freedom of conscience and for politics to treat issues such as this – which are ethical issues – as a no-fly zone to be left solely to the discretion of freedom of conscience.” So said Luca Zaia, President of the Veneto Regional Council, following the approval of the citizens’ initiative law on end-of-life care in Veneto.
