Venezuela, US lifts sanctions against Delcy Rodriguez
US-Venezuelan dialogue intensifies with possible oil deals and sanctions waivers
The United States lifted the sanctions imposed against Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, in what appears to be a new step towards the normalisation of relations between the two countries.
According to the US Treasury Department's website, the US lifted sanctions against Rodríguez, less than three months after then-President Nicolás Maduro was arrested by US forces during a raid in the capital Caracas.
President Donald Trump's administration has entered into dialogue with the interim government led by Maduro's former ally Rodríguez, including with regard to an agreement on the sale of Venezuelan oil by the US, and has granted sanctions waivers to incentivise US investment.
US forces captured Maduro on 3 January after months of high tensions between the two countries, triggering a series of changes in Venezuela. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are on trial in New York on drug trafficking charges.
