Three in one or three for one. The Volkswagen eHybrid family encompasses three models: Passat, Tiguan and Golf with power outputs ranging from 204 to 272 hp and a declared range that varies depending on the vehicle, but always over 120 kilometres. We tested the three models along the roads in the Verona area near Lake Garda to understand their differences and similarities.

Features eHybrid range

.

The eHybrid range is distinguished by a number of new features, starting with the innovative relationship between electric and thermal, with the electric now in command. In addition, the 1.4-litre petrol powertrain has been replaced by the 1.5-litre Evo2 with two power levels: 110 kW (150 hp) or 130 kW (177 hp); the electric motor is now 85 kW and the battery capacity has doubled to 19.7 kWh from the previous 10.4 kWh.

There are two power levels: 150 kW (204 hp) and 200 kW (272 hp). In the test we chose to drive all three models with the more economical 204 hp.

Given the increased battery capacity, the range was also upgraded to 144 kilometres with the Volkswagen Golf.

Tiguan, Passat and Golf: what it's like to drive

.

The Tiguan is the model with the lowest range, with 126 kilometres (declared) on electric power as it is the heaviest with a mass of around 2,000 kg. Despite its weight and ground clearance, the car is comfortable, thanks to the DCC system (standard) that automatically adjusts the stiffness of the shock absorbers, mitigating roll.

The Passat is the choice for families or even fleets thanks to its on-board comfort but also its boot capacity of up to 960 litres in the plug-in version. This is capable of achieving a claimed electric range of 135 kilometres.

Finally, Golf, Germany's best-selling compact car celebrating its half-century of history, in its eighth generation boasts a rechargeable hybrid variant within the range that differs from its predecessors in terms of its increased range, now 144 kilometres. Golf captures the attention with its ergonomics and driving pleasure in a compact, sprightly car.

Price list of the three models

.

The list price for the Volkswagen Tiguan starts at around EUR 50,000, for the Passat at EUR 54,700 and for the Golf at EUR 42,250
