Volkswagen: the full-hybrid powertrain is coming to the Golf and T-Roc
Currently available only in Germany, the new powertrain enables electric driving without the need for recharging, as energy is generated by an on-board energy recovery system. Fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions have been reduced by between 10 and 15 per cent.
Volkswagen has launched pre-sales – for the time being, only in Germany – of a new hybrid variant for the Golf and T-Roc. Both models are available with 170 CV and offer the option of driving entirely in electric mode, as power is supplied by the energy recovery system of the turbocharged petrol engine, which acts as a generator. With the Golf Hybrid and the T-Roc Hybrid, the Wolfsburg-based brand offers a solution with low fuel consumption and reduced CO₂ emissions without compromising on in-car comfort or driving pleasure.
Two electric motors, one internal combustion engine and a battery
Both the Golf and the T-Roc are fitted with a 1.6 kWh battery, just like full-hybrid vehicles, which stores energy. Three driving modes manage the turbocharged petrol engine – the 1.5 TSI evo – the two electric motors and the battery. All this delivers 170 cv. The new full hybrid performs at its best in city traffic and on out-of-town roads: the electric motor replaces or supplements the petrol engine when pulling away or at low speeds. The two models can therefore be driven in electric mode, operating silently whilst maintaining high power output at all times.
Electric driving reduces fuel consumption and emissions
A further advantage over mild-hybrid models is the ability – thanks to electric assistance – to reduce fuel consumption, CO₂ emissions and running costs. For the Golf, this translates into fuel savings and a 10–15 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions compared with a Golf 1.5 eTSI of the same power output. In urban traffic, the efficiency gain – of up to 35 per cent – is even more pronounced. The system’s power output has been increased to 170 cv and torque to 309 Nm. The car can now accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.
