Volkswagen welcomes Tayron, the suv that seats up to seven passengers (taking the place of the Tiguan AllSparce) and features diesel and electrified engines. We went to the province of Verona to test drive the new suv developed and produced in Germany and available in Italy at a list price ranging from around 46 thousand euro to over 60 thousand euro.

Dimensions and Style

.

The Tayron is based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform and shows generous dimensions, fitting between the 4,902 mm of the Touareg and 4,539 mm of the Tiguan: 4,792 mm long, 1,866 mm wide, 1,668 mm high and with a wheelbase of 2,788 mm.

Luggage is XXL: it goes from 345 litres in the seven-seater version to 2,090 litres in the five-seater configuration and with the second row seats folded down.

Aesthetically, the new model displays strong lines that give it a rugged style with its road presence, emphasised by alloy wheels up to 20 inches in size.

At the front, LED headlights and the standard illuminated Volkswagen logo ensure an unmistakable light signature. The same goes for the tail, which features a continuous LED crossbar and illuminated logo. Clean, precise lines underline the Tayron's premium design with an elongated body.

Spacious and digital interiors

.

Inside the cabin there is no shortage of space. There are two configurations of five or seven seats (not available in plug-in hybrid versions), where the second row of seats can be folded forward with the Easy-Entry function to allow entry or exit from the third row. It provides two individual power-adjustable rear seats for the smaller passengers on board. When not in use, the two third-row seats can be folded down into the luggage compartment floor.

The materials are of good quality, such as ArtVelours Eco (microfibre), real open-pore wood (taken from Touareg) and illuminated decorative elements.

The cockpit is characterised by its clean space and essentiality: the DSG gear lever is positioned on the steering column.

The dashboard is characterised by continuous horizontal development: in front of the driver is the 10.25-inch digital dashboard, while in the centre of the dashboard we see a 12.9- or 15-inch touchscreen (depending on the trim) from which the infotainment system can be accessed.

Of great use and safety for the driver is the wheel in the centre console which, in addition to the audio volume, allows control of the modes, four-wheel drive (depending on engine version) and pre-configured Atmospheres.

There are five trim versions, of which two are Plus versions.

Motor range and test

.

The Tayron's engine range includes five solutions: two 2.0-litre diesels with 150 or 193 hp, a 150 hp Mild Hybrid and two plug-in hybrids with 204 and 272 hp power ratings that allow up to about 120 kilometres of autonomy in 100 per cent electric mode thanks to the 19.7 kWh battery that can also be recharged with direct current up to 50 kW.

During our road test, we opted for the most powerful diesel version, the one with 193 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm combined with 4Motion all-wheel drive and a seven-speed DSG gearbox; a system that is characterised by good drivability and not excessive consumption: 6.2 litres/100 km.

The car was responsive and quite snappy, and we appreciated the presence of the second-generation DDC pro system, which adapts at all times to the road conditions and driving situation, taking into account parameters such as steering, braking and acceleration behaviour. In fractions of a second, the system calculates the ideal damping for each wheel and sets it in the shock absorbers. The driver also has the option of customising the DCC Pro setting from very soft to very sporty.
