Volotea announces the opening of a base in Ancona in December
The Airbus A320 based at Marche Airport will create 30 new direct jobs and around 170 indirect jobs, as well as opportunities for tourism and the airport’s expansion

It’s set to happen in December: Volotea, the airline for ‘small and medium-sized European cities’, is opening a new Italian base in Ancona. This will be its eighth base in Italy and its 22nd across Europe. The figures show that there will be one Airbus A320 based at Ancona Airport, 30 new direct jobs and around 170 indirect jobs.
The Marche region has the strongest presence in Italia
“Ancona is an important milestone in Volotea’s expansion in Italia: opening a new base means choosing to invest for the long term in a region and the people who live there,” announced Carlos Muñoz, founder and CEO of Volotea. “With this 22nd European base, we are reaffirming our mission: to bring small and medium-sized European cities closer together by creating new connections.”
According to the manager, the new hub “will help to strengthen the role of the Marche region as an increasingly attractive destination, well-connected with the rest of Europe, enabling a growing number of travellers to discover its heritage and areas of excellence”. This decision is not an end in itself but “the start of a journey that will see us announce further developments soon, including in terms of network expansion”.
1.2 million passengers carried
Since its foundation in 2012, the airline has carried “over 1.2 million passengers in Ancona, with a flight load factor of 95 per cent recorded up to June 2026”. For the current year, the airline is taking to the runway at Raffaello Sanzio Airport with over 150,000 seats on sale – a 12 per cent increase compared with 2025 – and a portfolio of six destinations across three countries: three in Italia (Catania, Olbia and Palermo); 1 in France (Paris Orly) and 2 in Spain (Barcelona and Madrid).
The first step on a long journey
The opening of the base, as the company points out, is the first step in a process that also includes new destinations. For Giorgio Buffa, managing director of Ancona International Airport, the opening of the Volotea base “is a move of great strategic value for the airport”. “It marks the start of a new phase, in which growth stems from a shared vision, based on data analysis and a long-term outlook,” he says. “Over recent months, the teams at Volotea and the airport have worked side by side, combining their expertise and objectives to build a solid project that is consistent with the development model the Marche region intends to pursue.”
