"Our farmers deserve to be heard. I know they are concerned about the future of agriculture and their future. But they also know that agriculture must move to a more sustainable production model, so that their farms remain profitable in the years to come". This was said by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in the EP plenary, announcing that she would propose to the college of commissioners "the withdrawal" of the legislative proposal on pesticides. The regulation 'has become a symbol of polarisation', she explained, stressing that 'a new, more mature proposal' will be made in the future.

"Farmers need a sound business case for nature improvement measures, and perhaps we have not made it convincingly. Of a real incentive that goes beyond mere yield loss. Public subsidies can provide such incentives,' she clarified, launching the idea of 'premium labelling, e.g. in cooperation with retailers and processors'.
