For those who wish to immerse themselves in the authentic soul of the still little-known South of the United States, Louisiana is the perfect destination, but it is in particular New Orleans, the iconic city of Creole and jazz culture, that best represents the beating heart of the state. It is a vibrant, multicultural city, where music resonates in every corner. The entire region prepares for a festive season that combines flavour, culture, light and celebration. From mid-November to the beginning of January, Louisiana offers a calendar full of events, perfect for those who want a trip that goes beyond the classic Christmas holiday. However, you have to allow about 15 hours of travel time, but there are several companies that operate flights from Italy with a wide range of fares.
The French Quarter of New Orleans, with its colonial architecture, cobbled streets and wrought-iron balconies, is a place where history and contemporary life blend harmoniously. Here, each neighbourhood tells stories of welcome and resilience, making Nola (as the city is commonly called) a complete and unforgettable cultural experience. The River Parishes (an area rich in history that stretches along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge) hold authentic historical treasures, including the famous Oak Alley Plantation, with its picturesque avenue of ancient oaks, and Houmas House, an elegant mansion that offers a glimpse of plantation life in the past. These places tell the story of the country's history through impressive architecture and interactive guided tours, taking tourists on a real journey through time.
For nature lovers, an excursion to the swamps - the typical swamp tour - offers a breathtaking experience amidst towering cypress trees, moss-covered plants and local wildlife. The bodies of water are inhabited by crocodiles basking in the sun or curiously approaching visitors' boats. The surrounding forest is home to raccoons and wild boar. You can opt for an airboat or kayak tour, which allow you to explore these enchanted landscapes, revealing the unspoilt beauty of Louisiana.
Baton Rouge, the capital of Louisiana, represents a meeting point between past and present. The city offers a broad insight into the birth, culture and traditions of the state. All this is encapsulated in the Louisiana State Museum, with exhibitions dedicated to politics and art, and in the Old State Capitol, an architectural jewel waiting to be discovered. At sunset, you can stop along the Mississippi River, ideal for scenic walks.
Louisiana's joie de vivre is also expressed through festivals and events that enliven cities such as New Orleans, Lafayette and Baton Rouge throughout the year, but with the arrival of winter - and the holidays - Louisiana is especially lit up with lights, parades and unique traditions. From local celebrations to spectacular illuminations, every corner of the state looks like something out of a Christmas card. From mid-November to early January, there is a calendar full of events, perfect for those who want a trip that goes beyond the classic Christmas holiday. Among the most fascinating traditions are the famous illuminations and light displays that transform towns like Natchitoches into veritable 'Christmas villages', with tens of thousands of lights decorating the banks of the Cane River and spectacular parades. Then there are the Cajun (ethnic group) and Creole-style festivals: markets, zydeco concerts - a musical genre that fuses Creole and Cajun music, blues, r&b - and reflecting the state's cultural roots. Bonfires on the Mississippi levee (artificial banks) reflect ancient local traditions of collective lighting to celebrate the season. Among the events scheduled for the coming months is the Logansport Christmas Festival, 22 November to 4 January 2026, a long celebration of the Christmas season with light displays. From the magical Christmas village to the family festival with craft stalls, the month of December proves to be particularly lively. Also not to be missed is the Golden Meadow Christmas Boat Parade on 20 December, a typical coastal Louisiana celebration featuring a parade of illuminated boats on the bayou, promising a relaxed but atmospheric atmosphere.
