Blinken, Rafah attack threatens to isolate Israel
The US shares Israel's goal of defeating Hamas and ensuring its long-term security, but a military operation in Rafah "is not the way to do it". This was said by the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, before leaving Israel, the last stop on his sixth tour of the Middle East since the start of the war. "You risk killing more civilians, wreaking even greater havoc on the delivery of humanitarian assistance, further isolating Israel in the world, and jeopardising its security and long-term position," Blinken said. "An integrated humanitarian, military and political plan is really needed," Blinken added.
Blinken to Netanyahu, support Israel but protect civilians
In a meeting in Tel Aviv with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his war cabinet, Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed the US commitment to Israel's security and the lasting defeat of Hamas, including at Rafah. In addition, according to State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, Blinken discussed efforts to reach an agreement for a ceasefire of at least six weeks that would secure the release of hostages and allow for an increase in humanitarian aid. Blinken also stressed the need to protect civilians in Gaza and to increase and sustain humanitarian assistance, including through land and sea routes, and briefed the War Cabinet on its consultations in Jeddah and Cairo on efforts to achieve lasting peace and security for Israel, the Palestinian people and the broader region.

We showed the sense of urgency related to the ceasefire leading to the hostages' return home but it is unimaginable that some countries did not want to follow our lead. However, there is strong support and determination from many countries to reach a ceasefire to release the hostages". This is how US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, leaving Tel Aviv, commented on the Security Council's halt to the US resolution due to the veto of China and Russia.

Thus Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu at the end of his meeting with Secretary of State Antony Blinken. US, cynicism behind Russian and Chinese veto on Gaza truce

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said this after the failure in the Security Council of the US resolution on the Gaza truce (read below, ndr). Ft, US asked Kiev not to hit Russian refineries
The US has asked Ukraine not to strike Russian oil refineries or other energy infrastructure, explaining that such attacks would have the effect of driving up global oil and energy prices. This was reported by the Financial Times, which cited three sources informed of the facts that the US fears a further escalation of the conflict. Another fear of Washington is that should Ukraine continue to strike at Russian facilities, including those far from the border, the Kremlin could retaliate by striking at infrastructure that the West relies on. This includes, for example, the Cpc pipeline, which transports oil from Kazakhstan to the global market via Russia. Western companies, including ExxonMobil and Chevron, use the pipeline, which Moscow briefly closed in 2022.

Poll, 71 % of Palestinians justify 7/10 attack
Seventy-one per cent of Palestinians ''consider the attack launched on 7 October by Hamas against Israel to be correct'': this is one of the results of an opinion poll conducted in early March in the West Bank and Gaza by Khalil Shikaki's Palestinian Center for Policy and Surevy Research (Pcpsr). Three quarters of Palestinians,'' the researcher says, ''think that the offensive has brought the Israeli-Palestinian issue back to the centre of attention after having been ignored for years regionally and internationally. Satisfaction with Hamas and Yihia Sinwar remains very high, while satisfaction with al-Fatah and President Abu Mazen remains very low,'' he adds. The poll (conducted among 1,580 people) revealed, among other things, that 94 per cent of Palestinians think Israel has committed war crimes, while only 5 per cent believe Hamas has also committed them. Sixty-four per cent think that Hamas will emerge victorious from the war and 59 per cent are convinced that it will continue to rule in Gaza. Forty per cent are convinced that a permanent ceasefire will be agreed between Israel and Hamas. On the political level, al-Fatah leader Marwan Barghuti (who is serving a life sentence in Israel) remains the most popular political leader and 84 per cent want Abu Mazen to resign. In the event of a general election, Hamas would garner 34 per cent of the vote: ''a sharp decline compared to the December 2023 poll,'' notes Shikaki, ''in which it was favoured by 43 per cent. Al-Fatah would only get 17 per cent of the vote. Even the new NPC premier Mohammad Mustafa does not gather significant support so far, according to the poll.

The measures, announced yesterday by President Ursula von der Leyen, will be on the table of EU leaders today. Blackouts are being recorded in several cities in Ukraine following the massive raids conducted by Russia in recent hours. "All emergency services are already operational," assured the head of the regional military administration, Oleh Synehubov, while the mayor, Ihor Terekhov, let it be known that due to the lack of power there are water problems. Wsj, Xi will have rare meeting with a group of US business leaders
Chinese President Xi Jinping will have a rare private meeting in Beijing next week with the corporate heads of US giants in order to send the message that the economy is a priority for Beijing after years of putting national security first. The meeting, writes the Wall Street Journal, is scheduled to take place on Wednesday after the China Development Forum. Although the list of participants is still evolving, it appears that at present it includes Chubb's number one Evan Greenberg, the chairman of the National Committee for US-China Relations Stephen Orlins, and the head of the US-China Business Council Craig Allen. The event is seen as a follow-up to last November's San Francisco dinner by the US business community where participants paid up to $40,000 for a seat at Xi's table. Analysts say the companies are likely to stress to the Chinese leader the impact that tensions between the two countries have on trade relations and express their desire for a stabilisation of ties. Other issues on the table are data transfer regulations, remaining market access barriers, government procurement and subsidies. On the Chinese side, however, there is a willingness to tackle the decline in foreign investment and the exodus of foreigners. Official figures show that last year foreign investment flows into China fell by 8% to around $157 billion, the first decline in 10 years. Xi's event will reinforce the message that China has a plan of action for multinationals. On Tuesday, Beijing promised a smooth transfer of data between company headquarters and operations in China, and said it would avoid repeated and irregular inspections. Top US corporate leaders are in Beijing for the China Development Forum, a meeting where they engage with Chinese politicians. This year's forum is notable for the huge number of participants from the US, the largest so far. About 40 per cent of the more than 85 business leaders in Beijing this year are from American companies.

Tajani, peace sometimes requires the use of force
"I would like the European Council to be a peace council, i.e. to study and decide on all useful strategies to achieve peace in Ukraine, Gaza and the Red Sea. To do this sometimes also requires the use of force. I mean: it is necessary to help the Ukraine to prevent a victory for Russia, because Moscow has violated international law so it cannot pass the law of the strongest. So helping Ukraine is needed to then sit at the peace table. If Kiev is defeated there is no longer a peace table'. So said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to Agora on Rai 3.

North Korean delegation visits China, Vietnam and Laos
A North Korean delegation of the Workers' Party has arrived in Beijing, the first stop of a mission that, in addition to China, includes Vietnam and Laos: it is led, the state agency Kcna reported, by Kim Song-nam, director of the party's International Department, and was welcomed on Thursday at the Capital International Airport by the assistant head of the Chinese Communist Party's similar department. The Kcna did not provide details on the purpose of the trip, but it would appear to be aimed at strengthening ties between Pyongyang and countries that share socialist ideology. For Kim, however, it is the first known foreign mission since 2021, when he was tasked with managing affairs with socialist countries. Kim, who worked as an interpreter for the 'eternal president' and founder of North Korea, Kim Il-sung, and his son Kim Jong-il, is known as an expert on China. This year marks the 75th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations. Pyongyang has declared 2024 the 'year of North Korea-China friendship', a designation first introduced in 2009 to mark 60 years of the relationship. On Thursday, Kim met with Wang Huning, one of the seven members of the CCP Politburo Standing Committee, and Liu Jianchao, minister of the party's international liaison department, according to the website of the Chinese Embassy in Pyongyang. Wang, number 4 in the Communist hierarchy, expressed China's willingness to promote ties with North Korea and proposed that the two nations work together to create a 'peaceful and stable external environment'. In response, Kim expressed confidence that the two countries can promote exchanges and cooperation in various fields. Kim's trip came as North Korea appears to be resuming its diplomatic activities with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) after years of closing its borders to contain the Covid-19. Laos plans to host the Asean Regional Forum and other related meetings, holding the annual rotating chairmanship in 2024.

CNN: 'Blinken to Qatar: Hamas honours hostage deal or get out of Doha'
US officials told CNN that in early March, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed a stern message to Qatar: tell Hamas to respect an agreement on Israeli hostages and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip if it does not want to be expelled from Doha, where senior members of the Palestinian Islamist movement are based. According to CNN sources, the message was delivered by Blinken to Qatar's premier and foreign minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani at a meeting in Washington on 5 March. US officials say Qatar understood the message and accepted it without much resistance. Doha has not commented on the specific meeting, but assures that it is exerting enormous pressure on Hamas. It is unclear whether Qatar issued the warning to Hamas leaders, CNN points out. Hamas established a political office in Doha in 2012, where senior members of the group are permanently based. As a result, Qatar plays a crucial role in the region between the Palestinian Islamist movement and other countries. Doha is a key partner for Washington in efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. (

"The negotiators continue to work. The gap is narrowing and we continue to push for an agreement in Doha. There is still hard work to get there.
