Trump's ultimatum. Khamenei challenges him: 'Never surrender'

Hidden in a bunker, while Tehran is awash in missiles, Ali Khamenei challenges Israel and the United States to show a semblance of regime solidity. "We will never surrender and if the US attacks us we will suffer irreparable damage," is the warning issued by the Supreme Leader in a new speech on state TV since the start of the IDF offensive. Words that break against the wall of the American superpower and its unpredictable president: Donald Trump, heedless of the threats, has renewed the ultimatum to Tehran, this time "definitive", to an "unconditional surrender", keeping open the option of direct involvement in the conflict alongside the Jewish state.

Ayatollah Khamenei, who has been hiding for days in an underground lair far away in Tehran to escape Israeli missiles, addressed the nation to attack "the Zionist enemy" and its main ally. A nine-minute message, with a photo of the founder of the Islamic Republic Khomeini at its side, in which the 86-year-old head of the theocracy said that there would be"no mercy for Israeli leaders" and that the Jewish state is suffering "severe punishment", so much so that "its American friends" were forced to "enter the scene".

And it was to Trump that he addressed his second strident: 'His military intervention will cause irreparable damage'. Khamenei's monotone and resigned speech did not seem to worry the White House tenant. "I have lost patience with Iran," Trump reacted, claiming he had told Benyamin Netanyahu to "move on". And remaining sibylline on the possibility of going to war: 'I may or may not attack, but I certainly won't tell you,' the words to reporters as the Pentagon says it is ready to carry out any orders.

The tycoon then hinted that the Tehran leadership was in such trouble that he had 'suggested coming to the White House to negotiate'. A circumstance denied by the Iranian mission to the UN: "We do not negotiate under duress, and certainly not with a warmonger". The clash, at the moment only verbal, between Khamenei and Trump, took place on the sixth day of the conflict between Israel and Iran. Tehran was again targeted by raids and a university financed by the Guards of the Revolution was also reportedly hit. Among the strategic targets destroyed, according to Defence Minister Israel Katz, was the regime's internal security headquarters.

And the bombing of nuclear sites continued. The IAEA reported damage to two centrifuge production facilities in Karaj and Tehran. Cyber units are also in action. Now the internet is almost entirely blocked throughout the country. The Iranian response came with repeated drone launches towards northern Israel and ballistic missiles over the centre of the country, including Tel Aviv. Almost all of them were shot down, the air force reported, according to which it was a few carriers and not a wave as in recent days. Tehran also claimed the use of hypersonic carriers. According to the IDF, the enemy has so far launched more than a thousand drones and 400 ballistic missiles, 20 of which have hit urban areas causing casualties and extensive damage. At least 24 dead and 500 wounded is the latest toll. In Iran, there are at least 585 dead and 1,300 injured, according to the calculations of the NGO Hrana.

While waiting for Trump to give the green light to possible bombings, the US military continues its mobilisation in the Middle East. The aircraft carrier USS Ford Carrier Strike Group will join the two other US warships deployed in the region next week, while increased movement is also reported by military sites in Aviano. Meanwhile, Israeli media reported satellite images of the US base in the Indian Ocean, the Diego Garcia, showing four B-2 bombers (already deployed in recent months). These aircraft can carry the GBU-57 buster bunkers: the only devices capable of penetrating tens of metres deep into the rock, where the Fordow uranium enrichment plant is hidden. The jewel in the ayatollahs' crown.

The Iranian leadership, Ravanchi said, doubts the "sincerity of the Americans" in light of the timing of the launch of the Israeli military operation against Iran last Friday. Nyt, 'few indications of diplomatic solution with Iran'

In an extensive report published today, the New York Times writes that, with Trump suggesting that the US may be directly involved in the conflict with Iran, there are now "few indications that the war can be brought to a swift conclusion through diplomacy". "When Trump woke up Friday morning, his favourite TV channel, Fox News, was broadcasting non-stop images of what was described as Israel's military genius. And Trump couldn't resist claiming some credit,' the newspaper says, going on to detail the US president's change of heart on Iran in recent months and days. According to the report, when Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu visited the White House in February, he gave a presentation to the president in the Oval Office on Iran's nuclear programme. Instead of choosing to join the assault or do nothing, Trump initially chose a middle ground, and decided to give Israel 'support, as yet undisclosed, from the US intelligence community to carry out the attack'. Israel began planning attacks against Iran in December, after the decimation of the terrorist group Hezbollah and the fall of the Assad regime in Syria opened up an air corridor, reports the Nyt.

Israel-Iran, China offers itself as mediator

China puts itself forward as a possible mediator for a de-escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran, although at the moment there seems to be no interest, at least on the Israeli side, in stopping Operation Rising Lion.

China, which has begun evacuating its citizens from the two countries, has made several appeals for a ceasefire. But it has done more. President Xi Jinping spoke directly yesterday during his visit to Kazakhstan where he attended the China-Central Asia summit. Over the weekend, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke by telephone with his Iranian and Israeli counterparts, Abbas Araghchi and Gideon Sa'ar. The Chinese diplomatic chief condemned the Israeli attack as an "unacceptable" violation of international law, but also said that Beijing is ready to play a "constructive" role in helping the two sides resolve their differences.

Media, 'Israel is running out of Arrow interceptor missiles'

According to the Wall Street Journal, a shortage of Arrow interceptor missiles could adversely affect Israel's defence capabilities against long-range ballistic missiles launched by Iran. This was stated by an American source, who also explained that the US is aware of the problem and is working to improve its land, sea, and air defence system. According to the source, the Pentagon has sent aid to the region, but there are now fears that the US is 'burning through' its stockpile. Tom Krako, director of the Missile Defence Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told the American newspaper that 'the US and Israel cannot intercept missiles full time. We cannot afford to stand by and play this game'. Most of the ballistic missiles launched by the Iranians are intercepted by Arrow missiles, but the Slingshot of David also participates in air defence, as does the US Thaad system.

The hypersonic missiles travel at five times the speed of sound and can manoeuvre in flight, making them difficult to intercept.
