On Monday 18 August, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met US President Donald Trump at the White House, accompanied by a group of European leaders, in an extraordinary summit that followed the one in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The meeting began with bilateral talks between Zelensky and Trump in the Oval Office, followed by an extended face-to-face meeting in the East Room attended by, among others, Ursula von der Leyen (President of the European Commission), Emmanuel Macron (France), Keir Starmer (UK), Friedrich Merz (Germany), Giorgia Meloni (Italy), Alexander Stubb (Finland) and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Trump said he was open to new forms of security for Ukraine and initiated contacts with Putin to organise a direct summit between them. However, he reiterated that he would not support an immediate ceasefire.
