Depopulation: ‘We must give young people back the right to choose to stay’
Vincenzo Lapunzina, former president of the Association of Sicilian Mountain Free Zones, speaks out on the issue of the depopulation and economic decline of small municipalities
The article published on ilSole24Ore.com about strategies to tackle depopulation in small municipalities, written by Davide Madeddu – ranging from incentives for new residents to income tax refunds – brings back to the forefront of the debate an issue that we have been tackling for far too long by addressing the effects rather than the causes.
To reverse the exodus of people and businesses from small towns, we must enable young people to build a life for themselves in the place where they were born.
A region thrives when people can work there, run a business, start a family and plan for the future. It dies when its young people are forced to leave in order to exercise these basic rights.
It is one thing to support those who move to a small municipality with tax incentives or rebates; it is quite another to create the conditions for sustainable employment, business and opportunities. Otherwise, there is a risk of keeping the Highlands hooked on a life-support machine fuelled by public funding, prolonging their demographic decline without restoring their economic autonomy.
We don’t need areas that rely on handouts. We need competitive areas.
