Yet another death from the West Nile virus, the ninth in Italy. The death occurred again in the Caserta area, where there have been four victims in a few days: he was a 76-year-old man from the province of Salerno, but a guest in a healthcare residence in Grazzanise. The man, whose clinical picture was already compromised like the other three patients who died, had been admitted to hospital in recent days and then transferred to the health residence. This morning, a 73-year-old man from Maddaloni had died at the hospital in Caserta.

Twelve new cases in Lazio

In Lazio, 12 odteen people have been infected with the West Nile virus, 11 of whom have symptoms with fever and are being monitored at home, while another has been diagnosed with neurological syndrome. This was certified by the analyses carried out by the Virology laboratory of the 'Lazzaro Spallanzani' National Institute for Infectious Diseases - Scientific Institute for Hospitalization and Treatment.

The 12 new cases were registered in the province of Latina, in particular in Latina, Cisterna di Latina, Pontinia, Priverno, Sabaudia and Santi Cosma e Damiano. With these latest investigations, in 2025 the diagnostic confirmations of positivity of West Nile Virus infection rise to 58. Thus, 54 cases monitored by the Latina Asl; two cases monitored by the Rome 6 Asl; one case monitored by the Frosinone Asl; one case recorded outside the region, with probable exposure in the province of Caserta.

These are the 58 cases of West Nile Virus: 16 patients are hospitalised in ordinary wards; 6 people have been discharged; 30 patients are being treated at home; 3 patients are in intensive care; 3 deaths.

"The increase in the number of cases of West Nile Virus fever, reported to the surveillance system and sent for diagnosis to the regional reference laboratory at Spallanzani, highlights the effectiveness of the regional surveillance network and the awareness-raising action of physicians, in particular general practitioners. Strengthening the system ensures that patients who could progress to neurological forms can be carefully monitored and that the extent of circulation can be assessed with consequent vector control interventions," said Francesco Vairo, director of the Regional Service for Epidemiology, Surveillance and Control of Infectious Diseases (Seresmi) - Spallanzani.
