What Francesca Albanese said against Israel
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, speaking at the National Assembly in Paris, announced that France will ask for Albanese's resignation on 23 February at the UN Human Rights Council
Key points
"The fact that instead of stopping Israel, most of the world has armed it, provided it with political excuses, political cover, economic and financial support is a challenge". This is a passage from the speech by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, at the Al Jazeera Forum on 7 February
The Common Enemy
Sthese are words that prompted France's call for his resignation. 'The fact that most of the media in the Western world has amplified the pro-apartheid and pro-genocide narrative is a challenge,' Albanese's speech continues, as reconstructed by Ansa. 'At the same time here lies also the opportunity. Because if international law has been struck to the heart, it is also true that never before has the global community realised the challenges we all face. We who do not control vast amounts of financial capital, algorithms and weapons, now see that as humanity we have a common enemy".
Albanese's clarification
Albanese then clarified his thoughts in a post on X on 9 February, explaining that 'the common enemy of humanity is the system that made genocide in Palestine possible, including the financial capital that finances it, the algorithms that obscure it, and the weapons that make it possible'.
In the course of his speech, Albanese also stated that in the past two years, everyone has been able to see 'the planning and realisation of a genocide, and the genocide is not over', but rather is 'now fully evident'. Today, 'respect for fundamental freedoms is the last peaceful way, the last peaceful instrument we have to regain our freedom', he went on, appealing to the most diverse categories of society to 'change our habits: from what we choose to buy, consume, read, to how we confront power'. Albanese then concluded by saying that he 'firmly believes that Palestine will be free. But we must act and the time is now in a 2026 of full commitment to responsibility and justice'.
