Which computer to choose for school and study? Here is our guide

Before buying a new notebook, it is important to evaluate some key features.

A notebook for students must have decent hardware, be compact and lightweight. Battery life is also crucial, especially for students who study a lot in classrooms or other places without immediate access to power sockets.

We are looking for notebooks that offer at least 8-10 hours of autonomy to ensure an uninterrupted study day. Weight and portability are other crucial factors for those who frequently move between home, university and various other study locations. A weight of less than 1.5 kg is advisable to keep the bag light.

Performance, determined by processor, ram, graphics chip, display and storage capacity, should also be considered for students engaged in multimedia projects. An engineering or design student, in particular, may need a higher technical specification than a literature student. A good starting point is an Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor, with at least 8 GB RAM (16 is better) and a 256 GB SSD.

The quality of the screen is another aspect that should not be underestimated. A display with high resolution and eye protection can reduce eye fatigue during long study sessions. We look for screens with full hd resolution and anti-glare technology. It is also true that we will probably be forced to compromise. Budget is indeed a critical factor for most students.

First, however, bear in mind that many manufacturers offer discounts for students, so it is worth researching available promotions to save on your purchase. In contrast, consider extending the warranty or a protection plan, especially if the notebook is expensive.

Bargains and student discounts aside, those on a tight budget should look at solutions with the best value for money.

At around EUR 600, there is the HP Pavilion x360 14, a versatile and powerful notebook with an Intel Core i5-1335U processor, 8 GB ram, a 256 GB ssd and a 14 inch full hd touch display. The battery lasts up to 9.5 hours, and the design is elegant and light.

Gaming enthusiasts who want a single PC for studying and gaming can check out the latest Msi gaming PCs, discounted in the school start-up period. They start at EUR 699 (instead of EUR 949) for the Thin 15 series (light, thin) while the others are over EUR 1,000 and are equipped with powerful graphics chips as well as 15- to 17-inch displays.
