With these words Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, chairman of Nato's military committee, ignited a debate on the Atlantic Alliance's defence capabilities that raised tensions with Russia.
Statements that come after years of hybrid attacks on critical infrastructure and disruptive actions by Moscow. The most affected countries are mainly the Nordics and Baltics, at the centre of a complex network of submarine cables often targeted by Putin's ghost fleet, designed to circumvent Western sanctions and harm US allies.
Who is Cavo Dragone
Giuseppe Cavo Dragone is an Italian admiral who has headed the Nato Military Committee since 17 January 2025. In his current role, he is the principal military adviser to the Secretary General of the Alliance. He is Nato's highest-ranking military officer and the main spokesman on all military matters.
Born in 1957 in Arquata Scrivia, in the province of Alessandria. He obtained his classical high school diploma at the Andrea Doria Institute in Novi Ligure and in 1976 he entered the Naval Academy to become an officer.
In 1980, he graduated and was sent to US Navy flight schools in Florida and Texas, where he obtained his licence as a fixed-wing aircraft pilot and also as a helicopter pilot.
