Italian banker Filippo Gori has been appointed CEO of JPMorgan for the EMEA region and co-head of global banking. It is the first time an Italian has become the number one of all the activities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa of the world's largest bank both by total assets and market capitalisation. Gori will also be co-head, along with Doug Petno, of JPMorgan's global investment banking and commercial banking.
The Profile
.Filippo Gori, 49, originally from San Giovanni Valdarno (province of Arezzo), graduated from Bocconi University in Milan and then began his career at JPMorgan in 1999, holding various roles in the London and New York offices. In 2013 he moved to Hong Kong where he held various positions until becoming JPMorgan's Chief Executive Officer for the AsiaPacific region in 2019, overseeing the bank's activities in the 16 countries where JP Morgan has a presence in that region.
The Tuscan banker currently resides in Hong Kong with his wife and two children and will shortly move to London to take up his new post. Dutch banker Sjoerd Leenart has already been appointed to replace him at the head of Asia Pacific.
In addition to his appointment as JP Morgan's number one for the Emea region, Gori also takes on the role of international co-head of global banking with Petno. This is the first management reorganisation by the two co-heads of commercial and investment banking Jenn Piepszak and Troy Rohrbaugh since the group's decision to merge its commercial, corporate, and investment banking activities. "We are an industry leader globally through our investment banking, commercial banking, and corporate banking franchises," Piepszak and Rohrbaugh wrote to employees in an internal memo, "and we have no doubt that two outstanding leaders like Philip and Doug, known for their hard work, dedication, and integrity, will continue this tradition as we lead into the future.
L’onoreficenza
Although he has always worked abroad, Gori returns to Italy when he can and is very proud of the honour - prominently displayed on his CV - of Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy awarded in December 2021 by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
