According to the Associated Press, the suspected killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has been identified as Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah.
Authorities stopped him after a manhunt that began on Wednesday, 10 September, when Robinson allegedly shot Kirk at the University of Utah, where the activist was holding a debate. Utah Governor Spencer Cox reported that authorities received a tip on the evening of 11 September from a person close to the 22-year-old's family. Cox also added that family members and friends of the suspect cooperated with law enforcement by helping to make the arrest.
According to initial information, the alleged killer had been admitted on scholarship to the University of Utah, but dropped out after only one semester in 2021. A relative told investigators that the boy had shown signs of political radicalisation in recent years. Robinson also reportedly spoke to a family member recently about Kirk, expressing his distaste for the activist's political views and mentioning his imminent arrival at the University of Utah.
Born in Washington, Utah, Robinson graduated with excellent grades from Pine View High School in St. George and had also obtained a scholarship to attend Utah State University, which he left after only one semester, the university confirmed. Registered on the electoral roll with no party affiliation, he had not voted in the last two most recent elections.
Before Robinson, the police had detained two other suspects, who were briefly held in custody and released on Wednesday.
