Win for Italia Team, the lottery to fund sport: when it starts and how it works

The lottery to fund Italian sport is set to begin. From 28 September, ‘Win for Italia Team’ will be up and running, the new pool-based numbers game established by the latest Budget Act (paragraphs 151 and 152) and launched by a directive from the Customs and Monopolies Agency signed by the Director-General for Gaming, Mario Lollobrigida.
An initiative made possible thanks to an agreement between Sisal and CONI, which yesterday hosted the partnership launch ceremony at the Salone d’Onore in Piazza Lauro de Bosis, attended by President Luciano Bonfiglio, Secretary-General Carlo Mornati, and Roberto di Fonzo, CEO of Sisal and Flutter for Southern Europe andAfrica, Roberto di Fonzo.
How it works
The game’s format is similar to that of “Win for Life”: players select six numbers from a pool of forty, with a choice ranging from 1 to a maximum of 27,132 combinations, and a daily draw at 8.00 pm. There are five winning combinations, depending on the number of matches: the odds range from 1 in 3,838,380 for a ‘6’ to 1 in 6 for a ‘2’, the latter paying out a fixed prize of two euros. Each bet costs two euros per combination, with a maximum stake of one thousand euros per ticket, except for system bets.
Distribution of proceeds
So much for the rules for players. The regulations also clarify how the proceeds are distributed. The prize fund accounts for 65 per cent of the total takings, in line with the other games in the ‘Win for Life’ family: the allocation divides the shares amongst the five categories (from 1.4 per cent for the first to 27.9 per cent for the fifth), with 40.1 per cent going to the jackpot fund and 1.1 per cent to the reserve fund. The state treasury, meanwhile, receives the tax levy, amounting to 26.5 per cent of total takings: this will be reallocated to the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) budget line that funds the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI).
Sisal points
Funds will be collected via Sisal outlets – over 35,000 across the country – and authorised online channels. The deadline for claiming winnings is sixty days from the publication of the Official Gazette. The trial of this gaming format will last two years to allow for an initial assessment of its impact on sport. In the meantime, every player will be able to view the projects supported and the funds raised by Italia Team via a QR code that will link to a dedicated platform.
