World Cup 2026: Italy-Moldova 2-0. Spalletti: 'Unfortunately I didn't make the difference'

Raspadori and Cambiaso sign the victory of Spalletti's last Italy

REGGIO EMILIA - "Italy! Italy! Italia!': the hundreds of children crowded in front of the entrance gates of the 'city of the Tricolour' stadium shouted it to the sky, already more than two hours before kick-off of the grotesque and melancholic evening that Italian football is giving itself, together with what is (or perhaps better to say should be) its highest symbol, the national team.

A sign, those choruses, that at least someone still believes in that shirt and in that Azzurro. Luciano Spalletti, who was - partly despite himself - the absolute protagonist of the evening in Reggio Emilia, believed in it with passion and conviction.

The technical commissioner on the bench with his dismissal already made official, the consensual termination already signed, his gaze fixed on the pitch and a great feeling inside, he may have pretended not to hear the whistles (not many, but still ingenuous) that came from the stands when the speaker pronounced his name at the reading of the line-ups.

It will take some time before it passes, the bitterness of Oslo and the pain of the farewell, for him, for our football, for all of us, naive lovers of that Azzurri jersey; hoping then that the advent of Claudio Ranieri will really bring the hoped-for change. We doubt it - and it is good to say it now - because it is not only the responsibility of the men if we have reached this point, but of a system that has marginalised and depotionalised the national team, battering its credibility and technical values. But of course, never underestimate the heart of champions,' goes the old adage, 'and Ranieri certainly is a champion, on and off the field.

Caresses and fears - The roar of the stadium, the choruses and applause for the Azzurri, the wait for kick-off. Small gestures of affection that count for little, perhaps nothing, but which do a great deal of good, in these chaotic and brutal days and hours, for our national team.

Ironically, Spalletti relied on a... Ranieri (the Fiorentina captain, immediately starting in the defensive trio with Bastoni and Di Lorenzo); Dimarco, Ricci, Frattesi and Cambiaso were also on the pitch from the first minute to try and inject fresh energy into the bloodless eleven at the Ullevaal Stadion. But after ten minutes, Nicolaescu's curling finish behind Donnarumma from an effective Moldavian counter-attack chilled blood and soul. VAR cancelled for offside and then we were back, albeit barely, breathing.

In fact, however, we created very little from Avram's side, although in the 16th minute Ranieri's own header splintered the crossbar on Raspadori's free-kick; Retegui added two more turns to the modest chance-accounting. But in the 40th minute, Raspadori's right-footed header made it one-nil after Ranieri's cross had been repelled by the defence. Not even time to enjoy the advantage when only Donnarumma's big hands prevented Reabciuk's shot, with captain Ionita (who has been in Italian football for more than ten years, last year at Triestina) luckily kicking the rebound wide. Not to mention Dumbravanu's framing shot, which Dimarco saves on the line. In short, when they come forward, the Moldavians are always dangerous, and this is certainly not good news.

The Bear's Mark - Orsolini for Dimarco and Barella for Ricci: these were the changes with which Spalletti opened the second half. And it was from the Bolognese outfielder's first touch that Cambiaso scored the second (though not before another thunderous header from Nicolaescu); we were a little quicker and more enterprising, and in the 70th minute Frattesi failed to find the right touch from in front of Avram; Maldini and Lucca came on for Raspadori and Retegui, but we continued to produce little and took too many risks in defence (which meanwhile lost Ranieri, who was knocked out after a hard clash with Baboglo and was replaced by Coppola).

Another Orsolini slalom found Avram ready at the rebound. Meanwhile, a Haaland goal in the second half was enough for Norway to win at home to Estonia. Lucca wasted a header in the second half after Bastoni's header, but Coppola made a miracle save on yet another Moldovan chance.

The Spalletti cycle closes here, from tomorrow it will be Claudio Ranieri's turn. Best wishes to him, and to all of us, to find again as soon as possible the Italy that makes our hearts tremble and beat, instead of this lost, tired and empty of dreams and desires.

End credits - 'I hoped to find a less tired team, and maybe in September it would be like that; but I still believe in this group, in these players. The national team I leave to my successor? This is it, this group, the difference must then be made by the coach, and I was not able to make this difference': this is how Spalletti bids farewell, in the belly of the 'City of the Tricolour': For him now begins the time of second thoughts, regrets and regrets, waiting for the next bench, the next adventure.
