Key points
An Italian school took centre stage at RoboCup, the world championships in educational robotics, which have just concluded in South Korea. Taking first place on the podium was the “Boggio Lera” Scientific High School in Catania in the “OnStage Advanced” category, which combines technology, acting and performance. In third place was the “Fermi – Guttuso” State Industrial Technical College in Giarre (CT) in the “Rescue Simulation” category.
The students on the team
The students from the team at the “Boggio Lera” High School (Emma Oddo, Simone Previti, Andrea Consalvo and Giovanni Misenti, led by teachers Carmelo Maccora and Massimo Marletta) took to the stage with a performance entitled ‘Revenant’, inspired by The Avengers: the robots are the result of years of passion and technical work, involving designs, 3D printing, microcontroller programming, cameras and artificial intelligence algorithms.
The Minister for Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara, congratulates the schools and the winning pupils, inviting them and their teachers to the Ministry. “This is a great achievement for Italian schools,” said the Minister. “I hope that the students behind this great feat will continue to nurture their aspirations with pride: their journey is proof of how commitment and talent can lead to the achievement of significant goals.”
What is RoboCup
The RoboCup World Championships, the world’s leading educational robotics competition, took place from 30 June to 6 July at the Songdo Convensia in Incheon, near Seoul. The event brings together researchers, students and industry leaders from around the world to share knowledge, discuss innovations and look to the future of autonomous robotics.
