Xiaomi has started official sales of its first YU7 in China, with a starting price of 253,500 RMB. The car, revealed late last year, sports a style strongly inspired by that of the Ferrari Purosague and is available in three versions: Standard, Pro and Max. Designations, these, that appeal to Xiaomi's world of origin: smartphones. After all, the announcement of the car in its final, ready-to-deliver guise came at the same time as the launch of new devices, foldable smartphones and unreleased smartwatches. And this, after months of half-announcements and piecemeal reveals, tailored to feed social media, especially TikTok, and generate viral hype about the car.

Xiaomi YU7 Standard is the rear-wheel drive version with a long range (830 km for the Chinese homologation cycle) and costs RMB 253,500. YU7 Pro, is the all-wheel drive variant and the price list starts at 280,000 RMB, while the YU7 Max is the top of the range all-wheel drive version and costs 330,000 RMB. The price list ranges between 33,000 and 40,000. However, there is no point in comparing with prices in Europe for reasons of taxation, pricing policies and regulatory compliance. No. Xiaomi did not invent the electric super suv that costs the same as a lithium-ion compact car. Prices here will be much higher, but in any case Xiaomi is challenging both Tesla, with whom it openly competes, and its compatriot Byd. And on its side, the Beijing-based company has an ecosystem of digital devices and a great reputation in this world, but in the car world it has yet to conquer it, and perhaps reels on TikTok or even track records are not enough.

Deliveries in China will start at the end of June. It is not yet known if and when the car will be available in Europe, a bit like what happened with the Su7 sedan. Speaking of the latter, Xiaomi today announced the official market launch and start of deliveries of the Ultra variant, which includes two high-performance variants: one dedicated to the track and christened the 'Track Package', and the other celebrating the Nordschleife speed record with a lap time of 7:04.957 and christened the Nürburgring Limited Edition, of course.

Returning to the Xiaomi YU7, the suv sports a wheelbase-to-body ratio of 3:1, a wheel-to-height ratio of 2.1:1 and a width of 1.25 times its height. Added to this is a head-to-body ratio of 1:3, which visually elongates the front bonnet and also provides a frontal crash absorption area of 659 mm.

It comes in a wide range of colours. In addition to the colours already announced - basalt grey, lava orange, titanium silver and emerald green - there are pearl white, ocean blue, sunset violet, aqua shadow green and dawn pink. The bodywork is matched by a cabin in five colour variants: pine grey, coral orange, twilight blue, ash grey and the unprecedented two-tone iris violet.

High-tech comfort and certified materials

.

The interior is made of materials that are soft to the touch. Space is not lacking: the length is close to 5 metres and the cabin is modular. The front seats are of the 'zero gravity' type, with automatic recline and 10-point massage, while the rear seats can be electrically adjusted between 100° and 135°. A luxury package, in short. The luggage compartment has a total capacity of 1,970 litres, divided between 141 litres in the front and 678 litres in the rear, expandable to 1,758 litres by folding down the seats.

The passenger compartment is designed on the basis of a 188 cm anthropometric model, offering 100 mm of height in the front, 77 mm in the rear and 73 mm of legroom in the rear. The rear seats are fully electrically reclining, turning into a 1.8-metre bed with a single touch.

It offers 36 storage compartments, including a 13.7 litre password-locked, voice-activated compartment and a 5.2 litre rear drawer for everyday items.

Under the centre console, two 80W wireless charging pads with hidden air vents charge the smartphone without overheating it. The infotainment system is supported by 25 speakers with Dolby Atmos and a proprietary Xiaomi audio algorithm. The integrated 4.6-litre fridge can cool up to six cans, while the air-conditioning system is designed with health in mind: no direct airflow, 357 mm front vents, triple rear outlets and a 2.2 m² SGS Gold-certified Hepa filter capable of purifying the cabin in just 35 seconds.

690 hp power and fast charging

.

All versions of the YU7 are equipped with the HyperEngine V6s Plus engine, capable of reaching 22,000 rpm, with a maximum torque of 528 Nm and a power output of 288 kW. The top-of-the-range YU7 Max delivers a total of 690 hp, touches 253 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.23 seconds (2.98 seconds excluding initial roll).

One of Xiaomi's strong points for its YU7 is its range: the standard version offers an impressive 835 km according to the CLTC cycle. The all-wheel drive variants offer a range of up to 770 km.

What makes this possible is the 800 V silicon carbide platform, which allows ultra-fast charging: from 10 to 80 per cent in just 12 minutes, or up to 620 km range in just 15 minutes.

The Xiaomi YU7 adopts a suspension system with a double wishbone front and a five-link rear suspension system, combined with twin-chamber enclosed air springs and continuously adjustable shock absorbers. The Xiaomi Smart Chassis, which is standard on all versions, adjusts set-up and rigidity in real time according to the type of road. The system also allows the ride height to be varied by up to 40 per cent, which is useful for negotiating ramps or uneven roads. The turning radius is announced as 5.7 metres, while braking from 100 to 0 km/h takes 33.9 metres.

The electric-electronic architecture (EEA) of the Xiaomi YU7 is the technological heart of the vehicle. At the heart of the system is a 'four-in-one' control module, which combines the assisted driving controllers, digital cockpit, central vehicle control and telematics box in one compact unit. This solution not only reduces weight and size, but also improves the energy efficiency of the entire vehicle.

The platform is characterised by two key aspects: computing power and reliability. The Xiaomi YU7's assisted driving is supported by theNvidia Drive Agx Thor 4-nanometre platform, which offers a processing power of 700 TOPS, higher than that obtained by combining two Orin X chips.
