Xiaomi has started official sales of its first YU7 in China, with a starting price of 253,500 RMB. The car, revealed late last year, sports a style strongly inspired by that of the Ferrari Purosague and is available in three versions: Standard, Pro and Max. Designations, these, that appeal to Xiaomi's world of origin: smartphones. After all, the announcement of the car in its final, ready-to-deliver guise came at the same time as the launch of new devices, foldable smartphones and unreleased smartwatches. And this, after months of half-announcements and piecemeal reveals, tailored to feed social media, especially TikTok, and generate viral hype about the car.
Xiaomi YU7 Standard is the rear-wheel drive version with a long range (830 km for the Chinese homologation cycle) and costs RMB 253,500. YU7 Pro, is the all-wheel drive variant and the price list starts at 280,000 RMB, while the YU7 Max is the top of the range all-wheel drive version and costs 330,000 RMB. The price list ranges between 33,000 and 40,000. However, there is no point in comparing with prices in Europe for reasons of taxation, pricing policies and regulatory compliance. No. Xiaomi did not invent the electric super suv that costs the same as a lithium-ion compact car. Prices here will be much higher, but in any case Xiaomi is challenging both Tesla, with whom it openly competes, and its compatriot Byd. And on its side, the Beijing-based company has an ecosystem of digital devices and a great reputation in this world, but in the car world it has yet to conquer it, and perhaps reels on TikTok or even track records are not enough.
Deliveries in China will start at the end of June. It is not yet known if and when the car will be available in Europe, a bit like what happened with the Su7 sedan. Speaking of the latter, Xiaomi today announced the official market launch and start of deliveries of the Ultra variant, which includes two high-performance variants: one dedicated to the track and christened the 'Track Package', and the other celebrating the Nordschleife speed record with a lap time of 7:04.957 and christened the Nürburgring Limited Edition, of course.
Returning to the Xiaomi YU7, the suv sports a wheelbase-to-body ratio of 3:1, a wheel-to-height ratio of 2.1:1 and a width of 1.25 times its height. Added to this is a head-to-body ratio of 1:3, which visually elongates the front bonnet and also provides a frontal crash absorption area of 659 mm.
It comes in a wide range of colours. In addition to the colours already announced - basalt grey, lava orange, titanium silver and emerald green - there are pearl white, ocean blue, sunset violet, aqua shadow green and dawn pink. The bodywork is matched by a cabin in five colour variants: pine grey, coral orange, twilight blue, ash grey and the unprecedented two-tone iris violet.
