Xiaomi accelerates the race towards automotive electrification with its second production model, the YU7 SUV, which follows the debut of the SU7 sedan. The launch of the YU7, scheduled for mid-2025, marks a major step forward for the Chinese technology giant in the electric car market, positioning itself as a direct competitor to iconic models such as the Tesla Model Y.

The YU7 Suv, from the official photos released by Xiaomi itself, stands out for its design, which combines muscular and aerodynamic details many of which are taken from its sedan sister SU7. The LED headlamps, for many inspired by McLaren, and the sculpted wheel arches unabashedly recall the lines of the Ferrari Purosangue. Xiaomi, it has to be said, tends to be 'inspired' by famous models, and this was evident with the SU7 saloon, which was even too similar to the Porche Taycan.

With imposing dimensions of 4,999 mm in length and 1,600 mm in height, the SUV offers a dominant position on the road and is 145 mm taller than the SU7 saloon. Its weight is over 2,400 kg.

The technological heart of the YU7 is the dual motor configuration, a 220 kW front motor and a 288 kW rear motor, providing a total power output of 508 kW (681 hp), good for a top speed of 253 km/h. Equipped with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor (like the SU7) for advanced autonomous driving, the Chinese manufacturer's model aims to stand out from the crowd of electric SUVs in offering a futuristic and customisable driving experience.

The Nmc lithium battery (the capacity of which has not been officially revealed) will be supplied by CATL, with a range that should come close to that of the SU7, which reaches up to 800 km according to the CLTC cycle (the test standard used in China, the counterpart of the European WLTP), although the larger chassis of the YU7 could help reduce this figure slightly.

According to rumours in the Chinese media, the estimated price is expected to be between 250,000 and 300,000 Yuan (about 34,400-41,300 US dollars). It is clear, therefore, that Xiaomi is aiming at a competitive and affordable segment, keeping the promise of a technologically advanced alternative to its direct competitor, the Tesla Model Y. Production will take place at Xiaomi's Beijing plant, already active with the SU7 sedan, which has exceeded 100,000 units produced. And in the future, according to rumours, a hybrid model should also arrive.

Meanwhile, the SU7 Max will be officially presented to the Italian public. The appointment to see the saloon live is in Milan in Piazza Duca D'Aosta, from 15 December to 6 January.
