Yamaha unveils the RW adventure scooters
The brand-new range comprises the RW700, RW700 Explore and RW350 – three models designed to push beyond the traditional boundaries of the scooter onto dirt tracks and rough terrain
Bringing the spirit of adventure motorbikes to the world of scooters, without compromising on practicality for everyday use: this is the philosophy behind Yamaha’s new Rw family, a brand-new range comprising the Rw700, Rw700 Explore and Rw350. The RW700 and RW700 Explore are powered by the 689 cc CP2 twin-cylinder engine, already familiar from several of the Japanese manufacturer’s models (Tracer 7, Ténéré 700, MT-07). The engine is paired with the YCC-T electronic throttle control and the Y-AMT automated transmission, which makes its debut on a Yamaha scooter. The system allows riders to choose between automatic operation and manual gear selection via handlebar controls, without the need for a clutch lever or gear pedal.
Particular attention has been paid to the electronics, which feature a six-axis IMU and a range of driver assistance systems. The Yamaha Ride Control system also offers specific modes for tarmac and off-road surfaces, adjusting engine response and the intervention of the electronic controls.
The chassis has also been developed to tackle various types of terrain: the steel frame is paired with a 41 mm upside-down fork, offering 160 mm of travel, and a 155 mm rear monoshock. The 17- and 15-inch spoked wheels are fitted with Pirelli Scorpion Rally Str tubeless tyres. The bike also features a 5-inch TFT display, Garmin StreetCross navigation, MyRide connectivity, cruise control and a Smart Key.
What’s more, the Rw700 Explore features further adjustable suspension, a heated seat and grips, a centre stand and backlit controls.
The Rw350 is more compact and is fitted with a 330 cc single-cylinder engine; the main technical innovation is the Yamaha Dynamic Ride system, which features the engine rigidly mounted to the frame and the CVT unit free to move, with the aim of reducing unsprung mass and improving the rear suspension’s performance. The chassis is completed by 37 mm inverted forks, 16- and 14-inch wheels and Dunlop D615 tyres. The RW350 also features ride management electronics, cruise control, traction control, a TFT display and connectivity.
