Madeira, a kaleidoscope of colours in the middle of the Atlantic
A summer at the festival
In Madeira, the most spectacular fireworks take place on New Year's Eve, with an event that has earned the island the Guinness World Record for the largest fireworks display in the world. But it is during the Madeira Atlantic Festival, held every Saturday night in June, that the most famous and spectacular fireworks competition to the rhythm of music takes place. It is a festival that takes the performing arts to the streets and brings the magic of fireworks back to the sky. Participants come to the island from all over the world, firework specialists who are carefully selected to participate. They are tasked with creating and performing an incredible firework display and the winner will be responsible for the New Year's Eve fireworks in Madeira. Also not to be missed is the Wine Festival which, from late August to mid-September, celebrates one of the island's most famous products, a cultural and ethnographic event of great symbolic value that celebrates the internationally renowned nectar produced in this archipelago. Madeira wine, a Portuguese fortified wine, has a fascinating history linked to maritime discoveries and the adventures of navigators. Its production, which began in the 15th century, owes much to the unique conditions of the island of Madeira and the sea voyages that shaped its characteristics.
