Anthropic: US export restrictions on the most advanced AI models have been lifted

Anthropic has reported that the US government has lifted the restrictions on two of its most advanced artificial intelligence models. “We have been informed that the Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5,” the start-up posted on X. “We will begin restoring access tomorrow and will provide an update shortly. We are grateful to our users for their patience and to everyone who has worked with us on the reintroduction of the models,” the brief post continued.
The US government has lifted restrictions on overseas access to Anthropic’s AI models, authorising their wider distribution after the start-up succeeded in meeting the security requirements set by the Trump administration. On 12 June, via a private communication, the Department of Commerce had imposed an export control regulation requiring the company to obtain US authorisation before allowing any foreign national – regardless of their geographical location – to access these models, and before transferring them to any destination worldwide. In response, the company was forced to deactivate its powerful Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models.
