Apple Intelligence arrives in Europe and in Italian on iPhone and iPad in April: it is now official after a statement from Apple. The note reads: "Apple Intelligence features will begin rolling out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU. This will include many of Apple Intelligence's core features, including Writing Tools, Genmoji, redesigned Siri with richer language understanding, ChatGPT integration and more." In addition: 'In April, a software update will bring support for additional languages, with more coming later this year. Chinese, Korean, French, Japanese, English (India), English (Singapore), Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German and Vietnamese and more languages will be supported'.
The European lag
.Apple had not integrated the Ai feature set in Europe due to regulatory concerns, worried about the impact of the Digital Service Act.
In particular Apple Intelligence will be available on iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later, and Macs with M1 and later. For Macs, Apple Intelligence will actually be available immediately through an operating system upgrade to macOS Sequoia 15.1. MacOS is in fact treated differently from iOS in the context of the European Digital Service Act. iOS is considered by the EU to be a 'gatekeeper', a status that puts the mobile operating system in a position of control of its target market.
Apple Intelligence available now in many countries
.The news is relevant for Europe, because it was not yet clear when the impasse between the Tim Cook-led company and the Commission's digital regulation, repeatedly criticised by Apple, would unravel. In most countries of the world, with the United States at the forefront, the news is in fact that as of today, with an iOS 18.1 or iPadOS 18.1 update, the artificial intelligence feature set is available on compatible products.
