Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna: this is the podium of the regions with the highest number of active companies with projects on art and culture (227, 123 and 112 respectively). This is one of the data that emerges from the presentation of the 2024 edition of 'Economics of Beauty', the study conducted by Banca Ifis that explores the role of art and culture as strategic assets for business competitiveness.

In Italy there are 732 active companies with projects on art and culture: they produce a total of 192 billion euro in annual revenues and register a productivity 1.4 higher than the average, which rises to over 3 in the banking sector, the most lively sector in the development of these projects.

According to the report, this type of investment produces a strong change on the company, both internally and in its positioning towards external stakeholders. As well as translating into increased productivity compared to companies of a similar size and market segment, it also leads to a 2.2-fold increase in salaries, demonstrating an impact on the enhancement of skills.

Which companies have projects on art and culture? The study shows that these are companies with a long tradition: 6% have been in the market for more than 65 years. As far as size is concerned, eight out of 10 have a turnover of less than 250 million. The more than 700 companies surveyed belong to different production sectors, with fashion, mechanics and agro-food at the top of the list. The objectives that the companies set themselves with these projects were examined in depth through a field survey involving decision makers (from entrepreneurs to institutions such as the Chamber of Commerce) from which four types of areas of intervention emerged: 52% build solid relations with territories and communities; 23% communicate with their external stakeholders; 12% use art and culture as tools for innovation and creative stimulation; 12% focus on employee engagement.

"The Economy of Beauty has demonstrated with numbers and concrete testimonials, from small and large entrepreneurs in our country, how successful the combination of art and culture and business activity is. A union that creates value, both economic and social, and which confirms the key role of the figure of the entrepreneur-patron for the virtuous development of the community," said Ernesto Fürstenberg Fassio, president of Banca Ifis.

The focus on banks

.

The Economy of Beauty edition 2024 identified 16 banking groups that have adopted art and culture projects and initiatives on a structured and ongoing basis. 68% of banks adopt approaches to build strong relationships with the territory and communities; 20% use art and culture to communicate and involve their external stakeholders; 12% consider these projects as tools for innovation and creative stimulation. Strong, and present across all three defined areas, is the involvement of employees.

According to the report, the increase in productivity of banking groups with projects on art and culture amounted to 27% in the period 2018-2022, higher than the +8% of the total banking system, with a performance equal to more than three times the average annual growth rate of the sector and about two times the annual growth rate of remuneration.

Art and Finance: the Banca Ifis case

Ifis art is the brand desired by President Ernesto Fürstenberg Fassio to bring together all the Bank's projects in the field of art and culture aimed at enhancing the artistic and cultural heritage.

Among the most significant initiatives is the recovery and restoration of 'Migrant Child', the work created by Banksy in Venice, one of only two works officially recognised by the artist on national soil. Exposed to the tide and bad weather, the work risked decay, jeopardising the message of hope and peace that recalls the values of the 1948 UN Charter on the protection of universal human rights. In addition to securing the work, Banca Ifis purchased Palazzo San Pantalon, the building that houses it, which will be transformed into an exhibition space for young artists, in collaboration with national and international cultural institutions. Not only that: the promotion of art also concerns Italian talent with the sponsorship of the Italian Pavilion at the Architecture Biennial and the Venice Art Biennial. Among the strategic operations developed by Banca Ifis to support cultural activities and social impact on the territory is the entry into the shareholding structure of the Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana founded by Giovanni Treccani Spa, through the subscription of a 2.4% stake.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of its foundation, in 2023 the Bank also created the International Sculpture Park, a project that today, within the 22-hectare garden of Villa Fürstenberg in Mestre, hosts 24 sculptural works by 14 Italian and international masters of contemporary sculpture: a work in progress that will see new sculptures from the international contemporary scene added each year, free to the public who can book their visit via the Ifis art app: an international case history in corporate collection and cultural and social responsibility.

Last in chronological order is the collaboration signed by Banca Ifis between two of Italy's major cultural institutions: the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome and the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
