Art Basel expands its brand in the Middle East, launching its fifth edition, this time in Doha, Qatar. The inaugural edition will be held in early February 2026 to coincide with the start of Ramadan, approximately two months after Art Basel Miami Beach and more than a month before Art Basel Hong Kong. The event will be added to the already busy calendar of global art fairs thanks to the MCH Grouop's partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+, under the auspices of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The first partner is a major investor in the sports, culture, entertainment and lifestyle sectors (it is carrying the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup) and the second is a strategic and creative collective specialising in exhibition organisation and cultural development, very active on museums in the region.
No disclosure on the financial commitment to support the new modern and contemporary art fair in Qatar. For the art ecosystem in the MENA region, it provides a platform to showcase leading galleries and artistic talent from the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and beyond. The inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar with around 50 participating galleries from both the local and international scene will be held in downtown Doha, in two venues: the M7 creative hub and the Doha Design District in downtown Msheireb, in close proximity to the Qatar National Museum. The aim is to stimulate new opportunities for the production, dissemination and discovery of art and to expand the circle of collectors, gallerists, artists and cultural leaders from the MENA region and around the world. The fair will be launched as a tightly curated showcase with a select group of leading galleries and artists. The new artistic director of Art Basel Qatar, the Swiss group's fifth art fair, is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Rumours had been circulating for some time among art market participants that Art Basel and its Swiss parent company, MCH Group, were seriously considering the Middle East; some industry rumours pointed to the Abu Dhabi Art Fair, which takes place in late autumn.

Developments

.

After all, it was some time ago that Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani entrusted Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former president of Qatar Museums, with the development of ambitious cultural projects in order for the country to achieve a leading position in global cultural exchange. Qatar has already amassed art collections, developed museums and exhibitions, founded design and photography festivals and created incubators for the film, fashion and design industries. Current initiatives include the creation of the future Art Mill Museum, the development of the future Lusail Museum and the creation of a permanent Qatari pavilion in Venice in the Giardini of the Venice Biennale. An important role in culture and its transformative capacity, which, however, should not make one forget the leading role the country plays in the inflamed Middle East region.

Convergence

.

The region is undergoing a profound transformation. Sotheby's launched an auction in Saudi Arabia earlier this year that brought in $17.3 million; Christie's announced its expansion at the end of 2024, when Design Doha opened; and this spring marked the debut of the first Art Week Riyadh. The region's flagship fair, Art Dubai , now in its 18th year, is held every April in the neighbouring United Arab Emirates. The prestigious Desert X AlUla recently held its third edition, a monumental land art showcase set in the Saudi Arabian desert. Both Qatar and Saudi Arabia have national strategies to diversify their economies through cultural investments by 2030.
