Until a few years ago, if someone had told us that a digital assistant would help us write emails, analyse data or generate creative ideas, we would have thought of a science fiction movie scenario. Instead, today it is the new normal: millions of employees work side by side every day with increasingly sophisticated algorithms thanks to generative artificial intelligence.

A phenomenon that has taken on astonishing proportions. According to Slack's new Workforce Index, daily AI adoption among workers has increased by 233% in just six months. An acceleration that is transforming the way we work - and especially the way we perceive the relationship between humans and technology in professional contexts.

The numbers of a silent revolution

.

The survey, conducted among more than 5,000 workers in Australia, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US, recounts a momentous transformation: since November 2024, AI adoption among workers has grown by 50%, 40% have worked with an AI agent and 23% have delegated specific tasks to AI. Those who integrate AI on a daily basis are 64% more productive and 81% more satisfied than their colleagues who do not use it. But there's more: 96% of respondents have used AI to perform tasks for which they did not have the necessary skills, a sign that artificial intelligence is acting as a multiplier of skills and an accelerator of professional growth, allowing workers to push the limits of their skills.

"The rapid adoption of AI is radically transforming the world of work," explains Denise Dresser, CEO of the Slack platform. "Workers' increased familiarity and trust in AI provides companies with a tangible opportunity to increase productivity and innovation, while making employees more confident and satisfied."

Millennials driving change

Against all expectations, it is not Gen Z that is leading this race. It is Millennials who are at the forefront of the digital transformation of work. According to the report, 30% of them claim to have a deep understanding of how AI agents work, surpassing Gen Z who stop at 22%. 68% use them for strategic tasks such as writing, synthesis and idea generation. A trend that is also reflected at corporate levels: 43% of executives use AI every day, compared to 35% of senior managers and 23% of middle managers. In practice, the higher you go up the hierarchy, the more AI becomes a daily working tool.

From automation to skills enhancement

.

The report highlights a paradigm shift in the approach to artificial intelligence. There has been a shift from pure automation - where AI replaced humans in repetitive tasks - to skill enhancement, where technology amplifies human capabilities. In particular, it emerged that the three main activities that are favoured by AI are search optimisation, i.e. fast and targeted access to information, eliminating hours of manual searches and allowing workers to focus on analysis rather than data collection; and support for writing and communication, from drafting professional emails to creating detailed reports;

and then as a stimulus for creativity: 72% of users expect AI to support or automate them in brainstorming.

The trust effect: the more you use it, the more you trust

.

One of the most interesting data that emerged is the relationship between use and trust. Those who interact with AI agents on a daily basis are twice as likely to trust the technology. A phenomenon that shows that direct experience is the best antidote to fears and mistrust. "It's the direct experience that makes the difference," comments Lucas Puente, VP of Research at Slack. "When you start using AI agents, you grow enthusiasm and confidence in the technology and it opens up new skills and opportunities in your everyday work."

A phenomenon that strengthens labour ties

Against all prejudice, AI is not creating distance between people. Quite the contrary. Workers who use AI every day are 246% more likely to feel connected to their colleagues and report a 62% greater sense of belonging. This trend is particularly evident among the younger generation: 34% of Gen Z say that AI makes them feel more connected at work. A figure that dispels the myth of artificial intelligence as an isolating element, showing instead how it can act as a catalyst for collaboration, but also reduce stress and information overload.

The future? It's already in the decision-making process

According to the survey, 80 per cent of workers are willing to use AI for strategic research in decision-making processes and 82 per cent would like it to support them in creating presentations. The 154% increase in the use of AI to perform tasks more effectively and creatively clearly shows that we are only at the beginning of a profound transformation. With an increasingly engaged and confident workforce, companies now have a unique opportunity: to embrace the digital revolution not as a threat, but as an ally for the future.
