Istat data indicate a marked improvement in the labour market in Rome and its province in 2023, with a sharp increase in the number of employed persons and the employment rate. The number of employed people was 1,819,000: the highest ever figure, 50,000 more than in 2022 and a good 95,000 more than in 2021. The growth rate of the employed in 2023 was 2.9% (Italy average +2.1%). Employment indicators tell us that the pre-pandemic levels of 2019 have been fully recovered and exceeded. This is reported by the Rome Chamber of Commerce
Recoved pre-Covid levels
."Istat data on employment in Rome in 2023,' says the President of the Rome Chamber of Commerce, Lorenzo Tagliavanti, 'confirm that the Roman economy is in good health and has largely recovered and exceeded pre-pandemic levels. There will be 50,000 more people employed in 2023 and we have reached an all-time record for both employment and employment rate. A very important aspect, then, is the consolidation of the growth trend in female employment'.
Qualifications unobtainable
."There are still some critical points," says the president of the Rome Chamber of Commerce, Lorenzo Tagliavanti, "on which we must work. As a priority, we need to reduce the gap between labour demand and supply, i.e. the mismatching between companies' demands for qualified personnel and the scarce availability of these figures on the market. A critical issue not only in Rome. In 2023, Roman companies had considerable difficulty in finding personnel with the required qualifications in almost four out of ten cases (37%)".
The Role of the PNRR and the Jubilee
"2024," concludes Tagliavanti, "will be a fundamental year for consolidating and structuralising Rome's economic and employment growth. The numerous investments linked to the PNRR and the preparation of the Jubilee 2025 are already having a positive impact in terms of employment and economic growth. Investments that, if we are able to make the most of them, will transform the capital into a more modern and efficient city, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure.
