(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - The return of purchases on Wall Street favoured confidence also in Europe, which tried to recover towards the end of the session, with Paris and Amsterdam closing higher. Milan and Madrid, weighed down by banks, remained in the doldrums. Frankfurt closed flat. The markets are trying to put concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence behind them, after several sessions characterised by high volatility, while expectations are rising for the State of the Union speech that US President Donald Trump will give in the evening (in the Italian night). Expectations are also rising for Nvidia's accounts: the US giant will publish its fourth quarter 2026 numbers on Wednesday 25 February with the markets closed, which will set the tone for the trend in demand for AI.
Trump will use his speech to convince the US public about the economy and unveil new cost-cutting measures as Republicans seek to address voter concerns ahead of this year's mid-term elections. The official theme is 'America at 250: Strong, Prosperous and Respected', a reference to the 250th anniversary of the country's founding. The speech, writes the Wall Street Journal, will emphasise the idea of American exceptionalism and the president intends to weave in stories of Americans who claim to have benefited from his policies. He is then expected to present tax cuts and praise his actions to lower prescription drug prices. Then there remains the tariffs issue, after the US Supreme Court's rejection and the 'lightning reformulation' of the tariff regime, with thenew tariffs at 10% coming into effect (for 150 days) .
Against this backdrop, major European indices closed mixed: the FTSE MIB of Milan, theCAC 40 of Paris, the DAX 30 of Frankfurt and the IBEX 35 of Madrid

The main US indices regained confidence after the heavy session on the eve of the event. Amd's stock gained more than six percentage points, buoyed by the deal with Meta worth more than $100 billion to supply chips. Lisa Su, CEO of Amd, said in a note that her company will provide "a high-performance, energy-efficient infrastructure optimised for Meta's workloads, accelerating one of the industry's largest artificial intelligence deployments and putting Amd at the centre of global artificial intelligence development". In its earnings report last month, Meta pledged to invest up to $135 billion in capital expenditures this year in an effort to keep pace with its large-capitalisation competitors, as well as OpenAI and Anthropic, in the global race for artificial intelligence. In total, Meta plans 30 data centres, 26 of which are in the United States. Today's announcement represents a crucial development for Amd, which is far behind Nvidia in the artificial intelligence chip market. Nvidia is the largest publicly traded company in the world, with a valuation of $4.660 billion, and controls about 90 per cent of the market, while Amd has a valuation of $320 billion.
