Asti, suspected case of Marburg haemorrhagic fever
An 81-year-old man returning from a trip to Ethiopia experienced symptoms of the disease and was placed in isolation
A suspected case of Marburg haemorrhagic fever was admitted to the Cardinal Massaia hospital in Asti, with fever and gastrointestinal symptoms. He was an 81-year-old elderly man, resident in the province of Asti, who presented himself at the emergency room this morning, having returned from a trip to Ethiopia where he had visited an area where outbreaks of haemorrhagic fever had been reported.
The patient, according to the health facility, was taken into the infectious diseases department, which is monitoring him. Blood samples have already been sent to the Spallanzani hospital in Rome for verification.
The man was and remains clinically stable, but in view of his travel itinerary and the symptoms he presented, in order to protect his safety and for preventive purposes, the medical directorate immediately activated all precautionary and isolation measures, thus avoiding any contact with other patients
The local alert chain has also been activated with the Sisp (Hygiene and Public Health Service), regional with the Dirmei (Functional Interagency Department for Infectious Diseases and Emergencies) and national with the Spallanzani. If the diagnosis is confirmed, the patient will be transferred to a facility with appropriate safety measures.
