AI-powered screening for oral cancer prevention at the Monza Grand Prix

The check-ups, carried out by volunteer dentists, will take place at the Mobile Dental Unit run by the Andi Ets Foundation and the Italian Red Cross. Should any suspicious lesions be detected during the consultation, the patient will be issued with a clinical report to present to their GP, who will then arrange for any necessary further diagnostic investigations via a referral, prioritising these according to the patient’s clinical condition. The patient may then consider seeking care from the IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori Foundation in Monza at the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit or at another healthcare facility where the investigations and any subsequent course of treatment can be carried out.

This year, the initiative will involve an even greater number of professionals: in fact, around 40 dentists will take part over the course of the four days.

“We have decided to increase the number of dentists involved in order to cater for the growing uptake seen in recent years: compared with the first few editions, the number of appointments has, in fact, risen by around 20 per cent,” explains Dr Roncalli.

‘The figures that emerged last year, during our first appearance at the Autodromo, are also particularly significant: only 1 per cent of those examined showed signs of suspected injuries, compared with a historical average of around 5 per cent recorded in previous editions of the initiative. This result can be attributed, on the one hand, to the different characteristics of the public involved and, on the other, to the growing focus on prevention, which has also been encouraged by the information and awareness-raising activities carried out in recent years.”
