Bolzano: almost half of all households consist of a single person: the 2025 demographic data

Bolzano is increasingly proving to be a city of people living alone. At the end of 2025, there were 106,901 residents, of whom 55,175 were women (51.6 per cent) and 51,726 were men, spread across 50,990 households. Almost half of these, 23,360, are single-person households: 0.5 per cent more than the previous year. The figure, reported by the Dolomiten newspaper in today’s edition, was announced by the city councillor, Claudio Della Ratta. The population grew by 330 between 2024 and 2025, an increase mainly due to migration flows. The proportion of foreign nationals stands at 15.3 per cent, with the largest communities coming from Albania, Morocco, Pakistan and Romania.

Births rose slightly, from 764 in 2024 to 785 the following year, whilst deaths remained stable at 1,078 in both years. The figures also confirm the city’s progressive ageing: the average age is 45.7 years, compared with 36.7 years for the 16,350 foreign residents. A quarter of the population is over 65, whilst those under 18 account for just 16.1 per cent.

Among the 17,077 households with children, those with just one child are clearly in the majority (50.5 per cent). In terms of housing, there were 54,022 flats in 2023 and 54,357 in 2024, representing an increase of 335 units over the course of a year. 50.8 per cent of Bolzano’s residents are unmarried.

Of the 296 marriages celebrated in 2025 (323 in 2024), only 9.1 per cent were religious, compared with 90.9 per cent that were civil. Widows account for 10.3 per cent, widowers for 2.4 per cent; the neighbourhoods with the highest proportion of widows are Europa-Novacella, Don Bosco and Gries-Quirino, where there are almost five times as many widows as widowers. The number of commuters is also on the rise, increasing from 26,400 in 2021 to 27,394 in 2024. In 2025, 47,327 people were working in the city.
