After a negative 2023, with the decrease in purchasing power caused by inflation pushing consumers towards cheaper cured meats, at the beginning of this year the first signs of recovery arrived for Bresaola della Valtellina PGI. According to data released by the Consorzio di Tutela, in fact, the first two months of 2024 marked a 9.4% increase in certified production compared to the same period last year.
"Already in the second half of 2023 we have witnessed a gradual recovery in consumption that in 2024 is taking on the character of continuity in the positive sign, after a period of actual contraction," comments Mario Francesco Moro, President of the Consortium for the Protection of Bresaola della Valtellina. The image of our PGI remains high and Italians (but not only) love this precious product for its nutritional value and because it is synonymous with an all-Italian tradition and know-how. This year, also by virtue of the new EU Regulation reforming the Geographical Indications system, we will strive to further strengthen the position of certified producers in the value chain'.
In 2023, the total production of Bresaola della Valtellina PGI referred to the 15 certified companies stood at just under 11,900 tons (-3.4% compared to 2022) and in total just over 33,256 tons of raw material (-4.34%) were put into production. The consumer turnover last year stopped at about 451 million euro (-8.3% compared to 2022), "with an impact on the province of Sondrio," the Consortium underlines, "of more than 225 million euro": in fact, the sector ensures about 1,400 jobs and is part of the Valtellina Quality Agrifood District - Official Supporter of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games - to which it contributes more than 80% of the value. 83 per cent of bresaola is sold in the large-scale retail trade and exports account for just over 5 per cent of production, for a value of EUR 13.3 million (-1.7 per cent).
