Buffalo milk and dairy products (such as Mozzarella Campana PDO): the Single Register for traceability is launched
Implementing decree signed by Minister Lollobrigida: “From now on, it will be possible to track milk flows, ascertain the quantities produced and moved, and make checks more effective”
A single register for buffalo milk to ensure the traceability of the supply chain. The Minister for Agriculture has signed the implementing decree provided for by Law No. 75 of 2026 establishing the “Single Register of Movements of Buffalo Milk and its Derivatives”.
“With this decree,” explained the Minister after signing it, “we are strengthening the tools available to the buffalo sector with a single system for traceability and monitoring. From now on it will be possible to track milk flows, ascertain the quantities produced and moved, and make controls more effective. A tool that protects farmers, rewards those who operate correctly and ensures greater transparency throughout the supply chain’.
The new traceability system, integrated into the National Agricultural Information System (SIAN), will collect and link data relating to the movement of buffalo milk and its derivatives, making it possible to track flows throughout the various stages of the supply chain. The system will also be interoperable with the National Livestock Register Database, making it possible to cross-reference information on herd sizes with declared production data. This approach strengthens the tools available for inspections and enables the consistency of production data to be verified.
Anyone using milk or milk products from abroad must declare this in the Register, thereby increasing the transparency of the various supply chains intended for processing. The Register will also distinguish between milk flows intended for ‘Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO’ and those for other products, so as to ensure that the PDO is produced only with milk that meets the requirements set out in the product specification.
“We want a supply chain in which it is possible to know where the milk comes from, how much is produced and where it is processed. This is essential,” concluded Lollobrigida, “to safeguard the value of Italian produce and the quality of our finest products, starting with Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO.”
