Widely expected, the compact electric BYD Dolphin makes its debut in Italy, challenging Renault 5 (which is more glamorous) and above all the electric Fiat Grande Panda. rDuring its debut, BYD has surprised everyone a little because it has demonstrated that Made in China can also be synonymous with quality and advanced technology in the automotive world: in a short time, the Chinese manufacturer has become Tesla's most credible competitor in the premium electric car sector. Today, the Chinese manufacturer presented in Rome the new compact Dolphin Surf, which exploits the technological know-how acquired on B-segment cars while aiming to be one of the first truly affordable 100% electric cars.At the edge of the empire

Despite the apparent invasion of Chinese brands and cars, the sales volumes that our continent can generate are several orders of magnitude smaller than those obtained in China. In fact, Europe is the rearguard of technological innovation, and this is mainly a question of time to market: the Dolphin Surf, for example, is the European version of the Seagull, a car released in Asian markets in 2023. The numbers, however, are important: since its market launch, it has sold 930,000 units globally, in November 2024, it was the best-selling electric car in China, even surpassing the Tesla Model Y, with over 56,000 units sold in a single month, and in April 2025, it was the second best-selling car in China.

BYD Dolphin, adapted for the European market

.

However, the version arriving in Europe today is not the same as the one available in China; compliance with European regulations and an adaptation to consumer demands have changed its character slightly. The European version, for example, has more powerful engines, with a consequent reduction in range, and is compatible with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. This might seem like a minor detail, but you have to consider that infotainment today is not just about entertainment but about complete control of functions.

BYD Dolphin, compact yet spacious

The nose is short, the engine sits under the bonnet, while the rear end features a roof spoiler that extends the line, improves aerodynamic efficiency and cleans the airflow, together with a full-width light bar.

With a length of 3,990 mm, a width of 1,500 mm and a height of 1,590 mm, it has compact dimensions perfect for city streets and parking in small spaces. Thanks to the proprietary e-Platform 3.0 platform, obviously designed exclusively for electric cars, the interior space is nevertheless surprisingly large and the boot capacity varies between 308 and 1,037 litres (with the seats folded down) comparable to cars in a higher class. The 2.5-metre wheelbase and 15- and 16-inch wheels allow it to handle fairly well.

The Platform 3.0 incorporates BYD's Blade Battery, which uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry to ensure longer life and safety compared to conventional EV batteries. The battery has also passed the nail penetration test, one of the toughest in the automotive industry. Also thanks to the proprietary platform, it is possible to use the world's first 8-in-1 electric drive system: it integrates the motor, gearbox, charger, DC converter, high-voltage distribution unit, battery management controller, vehicle control unit and motor controller in a single module. This optimises the use of space and improves efficiency - both particularly important factors for a vehicle like the DOLPHIN SURF.

BYD Dolphin Surf, technical specifications

The Dolphin Surf offers various powers and battery capacities. The basic version, called Active, combines a 30 kWh battery with a 65 kW motor for 0-100 km/h acceleration in 11.1 seconds and a combined range of 220 km (wltp), while the Boost version, with a 43.2 kWh battery, while retaining the same motor, has better performance: 322 km range and 0-100 km/h in 12.1 seconds. The top Comfort version combines the larger battery with a more powerful motor (115 kW/220 Nm), dropping 0-100 km/h to 9.1 seconds and achieving a range of 310 km.

Maximum DC charging is 65 kW (Active) and 85 kW (Boost and Comfort): the car can go from 10% to 80% charge in 30 minutes. Three-phase 11kW AC charging is standard on all versions, allowing a full charge (0-100%) in three and a half hours (Active) or five hours (Boost and Comfort).

All versions feature BYD's trademark 10.1-inch rotating touchscreen, which incorporates the brand's latest user interface as well as compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Below the screen is the drive mode selector and some physical controls for volume and air conditioning. As many as 20 compartments for one's small items and charging sockets with all available standards.

You can use your smartphone or smartwatch to unlock the vehicle via NFC and use the BYD app to cool or heat the cabin even before opening the door. Also available is 'Hi BYD' voice control, which allows you to access various functions without taking your hands off the steering wheel.

The Dolphin Surf also supports the V2L system, but this is not currently intended for exchange with the distribution network as much as it is for powering accessories such as minibars sound systems and spotlights for a night picnic.

The top-of-the-range Comfort trim also includes a 360-degree perimeter camera, LED headlights, tinted rear windows, lights under the side mirrors, heated front seats and wireless charging for the smartphone.
