Widely expected, the compact electric BYD Dolphin makes its debut in Italy, challenging Renault 5 (which is more glamorous) and above all the electric Fiat Grande Panda. rDuring its debut, BYD has surprised everyone a little because it has demonstrated that Made in China can also be synonymous with quality and advanced technology in the automotive world: in a short time, the Chinese manufacturer has become Tesla's most credible competitor in the premium electric car sector. Today, the Chinese manufacturer presented in Rome the new compact Dolphin Surf, which exploits the technological know-how acquired on B-segment cars while aiming to be one of the first truly affordable 100% electric cars.At the edge of the empire
Despite the apparent invasion of Chinese brands and cars, the sales volumes that our continent can generate are several orders of magnitude smaller than those obtained in China. In fact, Europe is the rearguard of technological innovation, and this is mainly a question of time to market: the Dolphin Surf, for example, is the European version of the Seagull, a car released in Asian markets in 2023. The numbers, however, are important: since its market launch, it has sold 930,000 units globally, in November 2024, it was the best-selling electric car in China, even surpassing the Tesla Model Y, with over 56,000 units sold in a single month, and in April 2025, it was the second best-selling car in China.
BYD Dolphin, adapted for the European market
.However, the version arriving in Europe today is not the same as the one available in China; compliance with European regulations and an adaptation to consumer demands have changed its character slightly. The European version, for example, has more powerful engines, with a consequent reduction in range, and is compatible with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. This might seem like a minor detail, but you have to consider that infotainment today is not just about entertainment but about complete control of functions.
BYD Dolphin, compact yet spacious
The nose is short, the engine sits under the bonnet, while the rear end features a roof spoiler that extends the line, improves aerodynamic efficiency and cleans the airflow, together with a full-width light bar.
With a length of 3,990 mm, a width of 1,500 mm and a height of 1,590 mm, it has compact dimensions perfect for city streets and parking in small spaces. Thanks to the proprietary e-Platform 3.0 platform, obviously designed exclusively for electric cars, the interior space is nevertheless surprisingly large and the boot capacity varies between 308 and 1,037 litres (with the seats folded down) comparable to cars in a higher class. The 2.5-metre wheelbase and 15- and 16-inch wheels allow it to handle fairly well.
