Dop Economy, innovation, health protection and generational change, Campania is declining its agrifood development model. This was the result of the two-day Campania Mater event held on 17 and 18 September at the Palazzo Reale in Naples with the media partnership of the Sole 24 Ore and which saw over 160 experts and operators in the sector confront each other in a 24-hour marathon on the future of agriculture in Campania and Europe.

The agri-food sector plays a leading role in the region's economy as certified by Nomisma. According to the research institute's study, presented in Naples, in 2024,for the first time, agricultural production in Campania exceeded 5 billion euro, making a decisive contribution to the region's competitiveness on international markets. Together with the food industry, distribution, catering, and the hospitality sector," explained Nomisma, "agri-food today represents 13% of the overall value of the Campania economy. The made in Campania agri-food industry has reached a value of 5.7 billion euro worldwide, is growing at a rate higher than the national average, and accounts for 26% of the entire regional export.

"We have presented a new model of agriculture based on excellence, sustainability, innovation and health protection,' commented Campania Region Agriculture Councillor Nicola Caputo.

During the event, institutions, companies, associations and scholars debated three major themes: sustainability with a focus on climate change and responsible agricultural practices; quality with the enhancement of territorial excellence and the PDO Economy; and innovation with a focus on new technologies and new international markets.

"The Campania PDO Economy," added Councillor Caputo, "was the protagonist of the first day, confirming Campania as the first region in Southern Italy in terms of value and number of certified productions. Driving this growth are the quality agro-food chains, with iconic products such as Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP (the third largest DOP cheese in Italy and the leading denomination in Southern Italy in terms of turnover), Pasta di Gragnano IGP, wines, and excellent fruit and vegetables. Productions that are not afraid of imitations and Italian Sounding, which we are able to counter with the traceability and economic and production value of certified Campania products, a real flywheel for regional exports".

Ample space was also devoted to the relationship between food and health, a topic on which the Campania Region boasts an important record: the concept of the Mediterranean Diet was theorised by the American nutritionist Ancel Keys during his stay in Campania, in Cilento, in Pollica, and then published in a 1975 work. And the debate that took place at Campania Mater on food and health with the presence of experts and researchers once again confirmed how much food choices, production techniques and lifestyles directly influence the population's health. And this is the purpose of the memorandum of understanding signed on the occasion between the Caserta Local Health Authority and the Campania Region's Agriculture Department, with the aim of strengthening the link between agrifood quality, nutrition and health, working to improve children's diets through nutritional education and the promotion of correct lifestyles based on the use of local produce.
