When officers arrived at the scene of the shooting, which took place at a high school, there was still an active fire situation. "There was active fire when the police arrived on the scene," explained the deputy commissioner of the Royal Gendarmerie of Canada in British Columbia, Dwayne McDonald, adding that "shots were fired in their direction". Officers found Van Rootselaar dead shortly afterwards from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
