Checco Zalone, 'Buen Camino' ever higher: 13.7 million takings
Gennaro Nunziante's comedy has already surpassed the overall total of 'Avatar'. Better start than "Quo vado" and "Tolo Tolo"
Second day of big box office for Buen Camino, the comedy starring Checco Zalone directed by Gennaro Nunziante released on Christmas Day. The box office on 26 December was EUR 7,918,273 (+37% compared to the debut), with 973,703 admissions, for a total ofEUR 13,766,122 in two days, an average per copy of EUR 10,715 and a market share of 70.8%: more than seven out of ten spectators, among those who chose to go to the cinema, saw Buen Camino.
No film has ever grossed so much on Boxing Day. The film distributed by Medusa Film has already surpassed the overall total of Avatar - Fire and Ashes (€12,196,000 despite being released on 17 December, i.e. eight days earlier) and brought yesterday's total market to €11,182,822, marking one of the best 26 December ever, the third best result in history after 2010 and 2009.
On Christmas Day, the film brought the Italian film market back to levels not seen since 2011. On its first day of release, 25 December, the film, distributed in a thousand copies, grossed over 5.6 million and reached a 78.8% share of the market. The box office exceeded 7 million euros, marking a return to levels not seen since 2011, with an even success from North to South.
Zalone also achieved his own personal record at Christmas: in 2016 Quo Vado, released on 1 January, had conquered 65.6% of the overall market, and in 2020 with Tolo Tolo, also released on 1 January, 75.7%. It remains to be seen whether the Apulian comedian will also be able to beat himself when it comes to the record for the most commercially successful Italian film of all time: at the moment, he has been on the box office podium three times with Quo Vado (65.3 million), Sole a Catinelle (51.9 million) and Tolo Tolo (46.2 million).
Buen Camino is very promising, but its long-term staying power will have to be assessed. Zalone's film is produced by Marco Cohen, Benedetto Habib, Fabrizio Donvito, Daniel Campos Pavoncelli and is a Indiana Production, Vuelta company, with Medusa Film in collaboration with MZL and Netflix.
