Meloni: abolition of vehicle tax for 14.5 million Italians
The cost of the measure, which applies only to 2027, can only be calculated once the details are available: but the figure is in the region of 2.5 billion
Amidst the flurry of proposals to tackle high petrol prices, the reduction in vehicle tax – applicable only for 2027 – has ultimately prevailed. Sources at Palazzo Chigi have announced that, at today’s Cabinet meeting, it will be abolished for 70 per cent of cars and for all motorbikes. “Today, the Government is scrapping one of the most hated taxes,” commented Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, previewing the decisions to be announced by Palazzo Chigi.
Costs carried over to next year
The news brings to a close a turbulent period in the planning of new measures designed to tackle the surge in fuel prices, and aims to dispel the image of a government struggling in the battle against high petrol prices. This strategic move allows the Government to reap significant benefits in terms of public relations as well. And, in practical terms, it shifts the costs to next year, effectively tying up a significant portion of the next budget bill.
Sources: P. Chigi, abolition to become a permanent feature of the Budget Bill
The abolition of vehicle tax, which the decree-law approved today has set for 2027, will be made permanent in the next Budget Bill. This has been confirmed by sources at Palazzo Chigi.
Compensation for the Regions
According to Palazzo Chigi’s calculations, there will be around 14.5 million cars, not including motorbikes, with the sole proviso that each citizen will be entitled to just one exemption. The full cost of the measure can only be calculated once the details are available, but the figure is in the region of 2.5 billion, which will have to be compensated to the regions, the recipients of the revenue. A meeting between the Government and the regional authorities is scheduled for tomorrow.
