Chile gives the go-ahead to Hnh Energy’s 11 billion green ammonia mega-project
It is the largest project ever approved by the country’s Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA)
The Environmental Assessment Commission of the Chilean region of Magallanes has unanimously approved Hnh Energy’s large-scale project for the production of green ammonia, with a planned investment of 11 billion dollars. The initiative, which involves the municipalities of Punta Arenas, Laguna Blanca and San Gregorio, is the largest project ever approved by Chile’s Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA), almost double the previous record of $5.4 billion.
The consortium, comprising the Austrian companies Austria Energy and Ökowing and the Danish fund Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, plans to build, in the first phase, a 1.4 GW wind farm with 194 turbines, a desalination plant, production and storage facilities, and a port for exports. Wind capacity will rise to 2.1 GW in the second phase. Work is expected to begin in 2027, whilst green ammonia production is scheduled for the second half of 2030. Around 4,000 workers will be employed during construction, whilst the operational phase will require 1,800 staff.
