Coldiretti at the Brenner Pass with 10,000 farmers to denounce the risks of war
Tensions in the Middle East escalate production costs with fertilisers at the forefront. Protest at customs against the import of products that do not meet safety requirements
by G.d.O.
"We need peace. It is always the farmers and the health of consumer citizens who pay the bill for war". This is the message with which Coldiretti is returning to the Brenner Pass on Monday for a large national demonstration with 10,000 farmer members from all over Italia.
The agricultural sector, already hard hit by the war in the Middle East and the tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, is facing a new spike in production costs related to energy, fuel and fertiliser. Suffice it to say that 20% of the world's fertiliser normally passes through the Strait of Hormuz. The tensions in that area are therefore reducing availability and strengthening prices.
But Coldiretti's demonstration at the Brenner Pass also aims to highlight the 'customs' distortions with food products that are often imported at reduced tariffs and without meeting the same safety rules as Italian products, and which thus exert unfair competition against Italian products.
This is why the demonstration will be held in one of the symbolic places of the entry of foreign goods into our country, in defence of farmers' income and citizens' right to safe food without deception. The aim is to ensure full transparency on food origin labels.
The mobilisation, supported by the #nofakeinitaly campaign on Coldiretti's official social channels, will also be an opportunity to relaunch a historic result: the approval of the law on agro-food crimes, inspired by the so-called 'Caselli Law', obtained after more than ten years of commitment and fundamental for strengthening the fight against agro-fraud.
