Consob: Guido Stazi set to become chairman. Here’s who he is
The decision is due to be taken by the Council of Ministers today. An expert on independent authorities, competition and market regulation. He has been Secretary-General of the Antitrust Authority since March 2022
After four months of deadlock (Paolo Savona’s term had expired in March), there has been a sudden acceleration in the appointment of the new Consob chairman: today, the Council of Ministers will appoint Guido Stazi – who has been Secretary-General of the Antitrust Authority since 2022 – to head the National Commission for Companies and the Stock Exchange.
Stazi (Roman, born in 1957) is an economist with a very strong technical and institutional background: he has direct experience in financial regulation, competition law, telecommunications and issues relating to digital platforms and Big Tech. He is an expert on independent authorities, competition and market regulation. He has held senior positions at the Antitrust Authority since the 1990s, served as chief of staff at AGCOM and was secretary-general of CONSOB from June 2013 to December 2017.
His profile on the AGCM website notes that he served as Chief of Staff at the Communications Regulatory Authority (2005–2012) and as Secretary-General of Consob (2013–2017). After graduating in law from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, he was a lecturer in Economic Policy at the Faculty of Law at La Sapienza and in Finance at Luiss University in Rome. Stazi taught Economics and Competition Policy at the Faculty of Economics and Banking at the University of Siena, and was a columnist for the daily newspaper MF-Milano Finanza and the author of articles and books on antitrust, regulation and the digital economy.
